Maranello, 7 May – Ferraris filled the top two places on the podium in their class in the Spa 1000 Km, the second round of the Le Mans Series and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. Victory went to car number 51, entered by AF Corse and driven by Giancarlo Fisichella and Gimmi Bruni. Thanks to a perfect strategy the first of the two 458 Italia GT2 took the win in the GTE PRO category, ahead of the F430 GT2 crewed by Dominik Farnbacher-Allan Simonsen. Third was the BMW M3 driven by Andy Priaulx and Uwe Alzen. The other AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia driven by Jaime Melo and Toni Vilander had to to retire a few laps from the end of the six hour race in Belgium. It collided with a prototype car which put an end to its attempt at climbing up the order after incurring a drive-through for having pulled an overtaking move under yellow flags.
“We are really happy for the team and for Ferrari,” commented Giancarlo Fisichella after the race. “This win is the result of impeccable team work and a fantastic car. The race was closely contested right to the final lap and the decision to do one less pit stop turned out to be winning choice.”
Fisichella and co will be back on track on the weekend of 12 June for the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours, the third round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.
Maranello, 6 May – Jaime Melo and Toni Vilander will start tomorrow’s Spa 100 Kms from pole position in their Ferrari 458 Italia GT2, with a lap time of 2.20.743 set by Melo and their AF Corse team-mates Giancarlo Fisichella and Gimmi Bruni are third on the grid in 2.21.086. Sandwiched between them and on the front row in second place are Rob Bell and James Walker who set a time of 2.20.915 in their Ferrari 458 Italia entered by the British JMW Motorsport team. “If it had not been for a yellow flag on my quick lap I could have done better,” said Fisichella, who is on the books as a Scuderia Ferrari driver. “Unfortunately, a car ahead of me spun and luckily I managed to miss him, going on to take third spot on the grid. The car has improved and we have found and sorted out a few small problems which means I am very confident for tomorrow. The weather forecast is good so there is reason to be hopeful.” The famous event at the Belgian track is the second round of the Le Mans Series and of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and gets underway at 14.05 tomorrow local time.
Maranello, 3 May – One month on from the opening round of the Le Mans Series, held at the Le Castellet circuit in France, competitors will be back in action this coming weekend for the Spa 1000 Kms, the famous endurance race that first took place back in 1924. After various ups and downs, the race has now reached its sixty fifth edition, when no less than fifty seven cars will take to the Belgian track in what is also the second round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. Of the six Ferraris entered in the GTE PRO category, there are five 458 Italia GT2 cars and one F430 GT2. The action starts on Thursday with free practice, with the final session taking place on Friday, prior to qualifying, with the start of the six hour race scheduled for 14.05 on Saturday 7 May. Also heading for Spa is Giancarlo Fisichella: the Roman driver, who is on the books at Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, is one of those entered in this much awaited event. He is teamed up with Gimmi Bruni at the wheel of one of two cars entered by the AF Corse team, from Piacenza, Italy.
