Australian GT Championship – The season gets underway in Adelaide

Maranello, 26 February – This weekend, the Adelaide street circuit hosts the opening round of the Australian GT championship. It will be the nineteenth running of the series that was actually first held in 1960, but went missing from the calendar several times. It was reborn in 2005, since when there has been at least one Ferrari on the grid every year. In the first season there were five 360 Modena Challenge cars and one 360 Modena GTC.
The first win. The first victory for a Ferrari came the following year and was down to the efforts of Danish driver Allan Simonsen, who was tragically killed while racing an Aston Martin at Le Mans in 2013. He won the first and third races of the weekend at Wakefield Park, at the wheel of the Consolidated Chemical Company team’s 360 Modena GTC.
The 2007 title. The following year, Simonsen was back with the same team and was a contender right from the start of the season. In the 360 Modena GTC, he won three out of three races at Eastern Creek, before taking two wins the following weekend in Adelaide. The Dane made it to the podium a further 14 times, finishing all the races in the points. He also won the final round at Sandown, this time at the wheel of the new F430, entered by Team Sirena.
The other seasons. In 2008, Simonsen switched to Maranello Motorsport, driving the F430, with which he won the first six races of the season. He took the two Sandown rounds, but in the end, the title went to Mark Eddy, with the Dane runner-up. Bowe was fifth. IN 2012, Peter Edwards won the Sydney race, while there were no victories in the next two seasons.
In Adelaide. As mentioned, the 2015 season starts in Adelaide, with three races over the course of a weekend which also sees Scuderia Ferrari represented, when its test driver Jean-Eric Vergne will drive a Formula 1 car along the streets that hosted the Australian Grand Prix from 1985 to 1995. There will be four Ferrari on track at the weekend, although one major player will be missing, the Maranello Motorsport number 88 car. The 458 was damaged at the Bathurst 12 Hours and has been shipped back to Italy for repairs. However, the second car entered by Mark Coffey’s team will be there, in the hands of Adrian Deitz and Cameron McConville. Apart from that, there will be two other 458s taking part: the Trass Family Motorsport entry for Jono Lester and Paul Kelly and the Trofeo Motorsport/Pirelli car driven by Jim Manolios and Ryan Miller. All these cars are entered in the Championship category. In the more junior Trophy category there’s one further Ferrari; Brenton Griguol is at the wheel of his own F430.

LaFerrari named Best Coupé and the 458 Spider Best Cabrio in Spain
Maranello, 26 February – Ferrari has taken two accolades at the Best Cars 2015 Awards organised by Motor Press Iberica, the Spanish division of Motor Press International. LaFerrari was voted Best Coupé while the Best Cabrio title went to the 458 Spider.
The most powerful car ever built by Maranello as well as its first hybrid, LaFerrari was named Best Coupé for the second year running, confirming the unanimously positive response it has enjoyed since its launch from international experts, clients and media alike. It was also a second title for the 458 Spider which repeated its success in the Best Cabrio category in 2013.

From a performance point of view, it’s clear that Mercedes is still ahead by quite a way, but right behind there is us, Williams and Red Bull, all very close. We will know more in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile we must move forward one step at a time, looking above all at what we are doing ourselves”.
James Allison: “The day did not run as smooth as yesterday but, in spite of this, we managed to score plenty of laps on our board, successfully completing a race distance, so that now we have two of them under our belt prior to Melbourne. We leave the winter testing pretty happy with the way the car is performing, the way the test has been done and the way the team is

Montmelò, 1 March – Before leaving the Catalunya circuit, Maurizio Arrivabene summed up the situation at Scuderia Ferrari, as the winter testing comes to an end. “Now, I can say that we have reached our objectives. The SF15-T is behaving as we’d expected. Kimi, who drove last last year’s car, sees an improvement and Sebastian, who is driving today, is also happy. But we all have our feet on the ground, because we know the other teams aren’t sleeping. It’s clear that Mercedes is there, but we have to concentrate on ourselves. At the moment we have a rough idea of our position relative to the opposition, but we know everyone follows different test programmes. Therefore, we are following ours, with concentration and discipline, which I believe are the keys to success. I have spoken to the team and I have made this clear.” Yesterday, the media were intrigued to see the Team Principal, along with Esteban Gutiérrez, the Sporting Director and a someone from the team’s main sponsor, sitting in the grandstand with the spectators. “I heard that in Australia there will be further restrictions in terms of passes for the paddock and so…I thought we might as well get used to going to the grandstands! I found the people to be very well educated and polite. These restrictions do not seem acceptable: having an “exclusive” atmosphere doesn’t mean having an empty paddock. Golf is maybe one of the most exclusive sports, but there are thousands of people following the players.”

James Allison: “We’ve got a lot of laps under our belt in this winter testing; but until you actually go out and do the laps for a race, one after the other, and not stopping except to change tyres, you really can’t claim that you’re ready to go to Melbourne and do it for real. So we’re happy to get our first race distance of the winter done, happy to have achieved at the first attempt, and with the reliability that we showed. So I’m pleased with the testing we did over the last two days, which shows clearly that the car works as we expected. Winter testing in Europe always asks slightly different questions from the car than you get when you’re in Bahrain: but it doesn’t turn night into day. Most of what the car really is is revealed here as much as on the other Grand Prix circuits during the year. And I think what we see is a well-mannered car, so we expect these characteristics to be broadly carried over to the other races”.

Montmelò, 28 February – Today, Kimi Raikkonen took over from Sebastian Vettel at the wheel of the SF15-T. The team’s programme focused mainly on further aero and set-up testing, while the plan for this afternoon is to run the car in race configuration. An electrical problem, combined with some pre-planned work, required a long stop in the garage. However, Kimi was out on track again towards the end of the morning, setting the second fastest time so far, in 1:23.276, with the planned programme due to resume after the lunch break.

Jokes apart, it’s nice that at the final test we could cover more and more mileage. Today we didn’t have any problem, we know there is still a lot of work we can do as a team, but so far I feel very good. If I had to pinpoint one thing, I’d rather be a bit quicker, but it’s difficult to evaluate how quick we are, because some people tried more of a qualifying trim and others did less so. I never drove the 2014 Ferrari, but I think this one it’s a massive step forward. That doesn’t mean that we are satisfied as it’s clear that if you want to win, you have to beat Mercedes. It’s exciting to see what’s going on behind them, which I think it’s not clear judging from the lap times we’ve seen so far”.
James Allison: “Today was a much, much better day, with almost flawless reliability, and it’s much more encouraging, as we get close to Melbourne, to have that. We did a lot of setup work as well, were very conservative for outright performance, but were able to get good direction for the start of the season”.

Montmelo, 27 February – The second day of testing at the Catalan circuit sees Sebastian Vettel at the wheel of the SF15-T. The weather is definitely better today and that has allowed the team to make good progress with its programme.
Today, Scuderia Ferrari has been concentrating on aerodynamic tests and long runs. Vettel also set the third best time this morning in 1:25.339, completing 69 laps. The team will be back in action this afternoon.

Now we can put what we learn today in place for tomorrow so to have a day much more like we want to have”.

Montmelò, 26 February – The final test session of the winter got underway today, for Scuderia Ferrari and the other teams at the circuit. Kimi Raikkonen is at the wheel of the SF15-T and his programme features various simulation tasks, relating to set-up, as well as fuel loads, doing runs of various lengths. This morning’s work was slightly affected by the unpredictable weather, with rain beginning to fall persistently, before the lunch break. The Finn set the sixth best time of the morning, a 1:27.813 and work will resume at the start of the afternoon.

Maranello, 26 February – In a short interview, shot at the Barcelona Filming Day, Esteban Gutierrez gives his first impressions of being behind the wheel of the SF15-T, the car the team is running right now at the Catalunya circuit in the second of two pre-season tests at this track. After countless simulator sessions, the Scuderia’s third driver was impressed with this first hand experience of the car, which has also helped him get to know the team and its way of working.

Montmelò, 25 February –Tomorrow, the engines will be fired up once more at the Montmelò circuit, which plays host to the third and final winter test prior to the start of the season. Testing runs for four days, from Thursday to Sunday. Scuderia Ferrari will alternate its drivers, with Kimi Raikkonen at the wheel of the SF15-T on Thursday and Saturday. Sebastian Vettel will drive on the Friday and Sunday.

The new V8 the star of two preview evenings in Maranello
Maranello, 20 February – More than 800 clients from all over the globe enjoyed the privilege of being the first to admire the Ferrari 488 GTB at close quarters. The Prancing Horse’s latest creation will not officially be unveiled until the Geneva Motor Show but has already proven the undisputed star of two evenings at Maranello.
The guests were treated to not one but two exclusive experiences. Firstly, they were given a preview tour of the new GES building which itself will be officially inaugurated in the near future. Later, they were taken to the 8-cylinder assembly line on which the 488 GTB is to be built, for the highlight of the evening: the unveiling of the new car. This was followed by a gala dinner.
Their hosts for the evening were Ferrari Chairman Sergio Marchionne, CEO Amedeo Felisa and Commercial and Marketing Director Enrico Galliera. Four-times World Champion Sebastian Vettel also made a dramatic entrance at the wheel of a 488 GTB.

Maranello, 20 February – On the eve of his departure for Barcelona for his second pre-season test session in the new SF15-T, Sebastian Vettel spent two very intensive days working with the Scuderia’s technicians. Happily, he also managed to squeeze in a visit to the Carrozzeria Scaglietti, Ferrari’s bodyshell facility in Modena, before driving the California T back to Maranello where he signed the counter in the Ferrari Store. Vettel was guest of honour at two special 488 GTB preview evenings too.

Sebastian Vettel: “First of all, I’d like to wish Fernando a quick recovery. Luckily, we have already received some good news, so I hope he we’ll be back in top form at next week’s test. As for today’s test, I can say that we have focused mainly on the car’s reliability, completing some long-runs, and testing various settings and tyre configurations. We could not run as much as we’d like, but at this stage of winter testing there are always some teething problems you have to deal with. Overall, I can confirm that my feeling with the car is positive and now I’m looking forward to the next week of testing”.
Simone Resta: “Overall, over these past days, we have followed the planned programme, based on development, on fine-tuning various components and strategy. We have also run aerodynamic measurements based on components to be developed in the wind tunnel, along with hardware and setup tests, all while runing different tyre programmes. We had some planned stops in order to change components that had reached the end of their life cycle. We did a lot of practice starts, but we have not yet completed a race simulation, which is in accordance with our programme. The drivers said they have a good feeling with the car and the set-up work has served to improve that, as well as being carried out to adapt to the continually varying weather conditions”.

Montmelò, 22 February – Fourth and final day of testing for Scuderia Ferrari at Barcelona. Once again, Sebastian Vettel is at the wheel of the SF15-T. So far, it’s been very cold, but with beautiful sunshine at the Catalunya circuit, although a strong wind blew up around mid-morning, which makes data comparison somewhat difficult. Today, the team is concentrating on some tyre work and on set-up. Sebastian has set the second fastest time of 1.26:312, with 59 laps to his name. With the session being red flagged just before the lunch break, the team opted to stop and get back to work in the afternoon.

Montmelò, 21 February –The third day of testing for Scuderia Ferrari at the Catalan track saw a change of driver, with Sebastian Vettel driving the SF15-T today and tomorrow. The weather did not have a particularly warm welcome for the German, with intermittent rain falling throughout the morning, which made the track very slippery. In fact, because of this, Sebastian went off the track at Turn 5 on his first out-lap, but no damage was done. After that, he went on to complete 46 laps over the course of the morning, the quickest in a time of 1.26:407, third fastest overall. Today’s programme again features aerodynamic and set-up work. As the rain intensified, the team decided to slightly modify the programme, with normal work set to resume once it’s over.

The team bosses have managed to put the right people in the right places. It’s still early days, but everybody seems to enjoy it more. For the next test we’ll try to put the right things into the car”.

Montmelò, 20 February –On the second day of testing for Scuderia Ferrari at the Montmelo circuit, Maurizio Arrivabene met with the journalists at the circuit. “My job is to rebuild the team, to create a calm environment and to ensure that the great determination I have seen in every member of the team is rewarded with results. I have never believed in such a thing as a winter championship: we have our feet on the ground and as I said already in December, winning two races could be considered a success, three would be perfect and if we win four, I will run barefoot on the hills of Maranello. We have two fantastic drivers and they are also great friends and that can only benefit the whole team. I wish to underline yet again that the most important thing is for us all to pull together, with common goals and with the determination I saw in the eyes of those who were even at work on 24 and 31 December, in the Mechanical or Composites departments, to the backdrop of the sound of the engines rather than “Jingle Bells.” I have seen that there are exceptional people in Maranello and each one of them is making a contribution. However, it’s clear the car does not belong to any one person, it belongs to Ferrari and its people.”

Montmelò, 19 February –This is the first of four days testing for Scuderia Ferrari at Montmelò’s Catalunya circuit, which, as usual, will play host to the first European round of the Formula One season. With just over 20 days to go to the start of the championship, Kimi Raikkonen is at the wheel of the SF15-T.
The Finn is working on set-up testing, long runs and practice starts. For much of the morning, he was second fastest, before taking the break earlier than planned, so that the mechanics could carry out some checks on the car. This afternoon, Scuderia Ferrari will continue with the programme, which includes trying various tyre compounds.

The second year of the Ferrari Museum in Modena, created in the house where Enzo Ferrari was born in 1898, opens with two different but equally unmissable attractions.
The area that was the office of Alfredo Ferrari, Enzo’s father, at the start of the last century, is now home to the Museum of Ferrari Engines. The area is divided into six sections: experimental engines; small capacity 2 to 6 cylinder units; the classic 12 cylinder engines; the 8 cylinders; the turbo charged units and finally, the Formula 1 engines. In each section, a 3D video explains the characteristics of the various engines and how they worked.
Apart from the engines, there are also some of the cars to which they were fitted. From the one Ascari used to win the world titles in 1952 and 1953 to the famous Sport 750 Monza, from Villeneuve’s Formula 1 turbo to the F60, the first ever Ferrari to be fitted with KERS.
Alongside this “technical” offering can be found the homage to Luciano Pavarotti. The opera star was born in 1935, when Enzo Ferrari was already 37, but despite the age difference, the two men knew one another and held each other in high regard. Ferrari, who as a youngster had even dreamed of becoming an opera singer, welcomed the rising talent to Maranello. Luciano had bought a second-hand Maserati Ghibli, which is on show today in the MEF, but he wanted a Ferrari. He chose an F40, another car that is on display in the museum.
Thanks to a technology that uses 19 projectors, visitors will be “wrapped up” in the video, Enzo e Luciano: da Modena a Modena, with a soundtrack that features some of the most beautiful of the tenor’s songs. The images play on the affinity between the two men: where they came from, their success on the world stage, their fans and admirers, the international recognition they received. In terms of the overall look of the exhibition, it highlights details that became their trademarks, such as Ferrari’s dark glasses and Pavarotti’s scarf and Borsalino hat.
Some of the most famous Ferraris of all time are on show in this pavilion, from one of the earliest models, the 1948 166 Touring right up to the awe inspiring LaFerrari.
Thanks to a collaboration with Verona’s Fondazione Arena and Arena Museo Opera, visitors can also admire some of the set designs used by Pavarotti during his career.
The exhibition is open until February 2016. It can be seen on its own, or combined with a visit to the Ferrari Museum in Maranello.
Furthermore, as from 4 April, a “passport” will be available at a cost of 60 Euros, which, for two days, includes use of a shuttle between the Ferrari Museums, the one in Pavarotti’s house and other places of interest in the area. There is a food and wine trail that includes the cheese making factories of Parmigiano Reggiano, the Lambrusco wine cellars, the producers of Balsamic vinegar and the Salumeria (delicatessen) Museum, as well as cultural visits to Modena, to Nonantola and its abbey and the potteries of Sassuola, with its ceramics manufacturers and museums.

The Ferrari Motor Museum is unveiled with a tribute to the great tenor Luciano Pavarotti
Modena 18th february – “My father never left town, he stayed right here in Maranello and people came to meet him. Pavarotti on the other hand took his music around the globe. They had two diametrically opposite approaches to achieve the exact same thing: to share their respective passions and thereby become ambassadors of this land to the world” so said vice president Piero Ferrari in a perfect summary of the idea behind a joint tribute to founder of the Prancing Horse Enzo Ferrari and the legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
Thus the Museo Enzo Ferrari (MEF) marked this day, the 18th of February, the day Enzo Ferrari was born 117 years ago, with the inauguration of the Ferrari Motor Museum. Located in the space where Alfredo, Enzo’s father had his workshop the museum showcases the motors that have made Ferrari’s history both on the track and off.
In the MEF’s main hall, amidst spectacular cars from the past and present, a film that encapsulates the triumphs of Ferrari and Pavarotti, two of Modena’s greatest native sons was screened.
Nicoletta Pavarotti reminisced about her late husband’s passion for Ferrari: “He had a F40 but sold it out of love for me, he was worried I would drive it…” Piero Ferrari and Nicoletta Pavarotti were joined by Ferrari museum director Antonio Ghini, the mayor of Modena Gian Carlo Muzzarelli and the president of the region of Emilia Romagna Stefano Bonaccini . The latter two emphasized that the coming Milan EXPO is also an opportunity to show off the many cultural and gastronomic attractions of Modena and the Emilia Romagna region.

And could this be made without having to overturn the current technical rules? At Ferrari, we believe so. Let us introduce you to the ‘concept design’ that was conceived by our design studio (Centro Stile Ferrari) together with the Scuderia’s aero department.
Minimal changes give the car a look that is way different from what have been familiar with so far. Our challenge was to create something that was – to put it short – better looking. We value your comments on that.
