PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (August 17, 2014) — Excited cheers echoed across the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links Sunday when a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe was named Best of Show at the 64th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The car, owned by Jon Shirley of Medina, Washington, was the first postwar car to take the top award at the prestigious event in nearly five decades. It was also the first Ferrari to win.
“This is a road-going Ferrari, and it has had quite the famous life having been designed by Sergio Scaglietti for Roberto Rossellini,” said Chairman Sandra Button. “Its design was also trend-setting. So it is fitting that this is our first postwar winner in many years.” The last postwar car to be named Best of Show was a 1964 Maserati Mistral Coupé, which topped contenders back in 1968.
When asked about the significance of the win by his postwar car, Shirley said, “I just hope it means that some more will have the chance to do the same thing. There are some wonderful coachbuilt postwar cars, and I think the owners should bring them here and try for the Best. I’ve won Best of Show before but this was really a special thrill to do it with this car.” Shirley, the former president of Microsoft, previously won in 2008 with a 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta.
The 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance showcased 216 cars and motorcycles, 35 of which came from outside of the United States. It also raised $1,677,445 for charity, bringing total charitable donations from the Concours to more than $19 million over time.
The event marked the centennial of Maserati and included first-time features of Ruxtons, the first American passenger cars with front-wheel drive, and Streamlined Tatras, technological wonders built in Czechoslovakia. A jaw-dropping display of 20 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossas was placed at one end of the show field, and cars exhibiting the curvaceous coachwork of Fernandez et Darrin posed at the edge of Carmel Bay. There were also special classes for Postwar Rolls-Royce Phantoms and Eastern European Motorcycles, and a display honoring cars that participated in the 1914 French Grand Prix.
The judging process at the Pebble Beach Concours is two-fold: Class Judges focus primarily on originality and authenticity, while Honorary Judges direct their attention to design, styling and elegance. To be eligible to win Best of Show—the event’s top award—a car must first win its class.
Shirley acquired his winning Ferrari back in 1995, and after a full restoration, he first showed the car at the Pebble Beach Concours in 1998. It won its class on that occasion, but did not go further. After being used on numerous tours and rallies, the car was recently restored once more, with a focus on originality, incorporating new research. For example, leather seats were returned to their original vinyl. The final result on Sunday was dramatically different, with the car garnering Best of Show.
“The styling is very special, but I love the engine, I love to drive the car,” said Shirley. “It’s a very powerful car. It’s a racecar underneath; it’s four and one-half liters. And it’s a great deal of fun.”
Other nominees for Best of Show included a 1934 Hispano-Suiza J12 Fernandez et Darrin Coupé de Ville owned by Robert M and Anne Brockinton Lee of Reno, Nevada; a 1934 Packard Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria owned by Frank and Milli Ricciardelli of Sarasota, Florida; and a 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vanvooren Sports Cabriolet owned by Lord Bamford of Gloucestershire, England.
The 65th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will take place on Sunday, August 16, 2015.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (May 20, 2014) — Building on its 64-year legacy, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance announces the addition of two new events to the calendar for Pebble Beach Automotive Week in 2014—the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum presented by Credit Suisse and the Pebble Beach Classic Car Expo.
Pebble Beach RetroAuto, now in its tenth year, will change locations to help anchor these new offerings.
The new Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum presented by Credit Suisse will feature luminaries of the automotive world discussing the most pertinent topics facing the collector car world today. Must-see panels and interviews, most of which will be open to the public without fee, will take place from Thursday, August 14 through Saturday, August 16 in a special pavilion on the edge of the first fairway of The Links at Spanish Bay.
“The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance remains the heart of automotive week, and we continue to focus on recognizing and celebrating the best automobiles in the world,” said Pebble Beach Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “This new forum, presented in partnership with Credit Suisse, brings to the fore some of the people who have created or made history with or spent a lifetime caring for these cars. We hope this forum is a place where we can come together as a community, tackle some of the tough questions facing the car world and draw knowledge from experts in the field—all while encouraging new automotive enthusiasts.”
Forum speakers confirmed to date include racing greats Jochen Mass, Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart; designers Chris Bangle, Moray Callum, Shiro Nakamura, Ed Welburn and Andrea Zagato; respected appraisers and vintage car racers Leigh and Leslie Keno; media leaders Wayne Carini and Keith Martin; and respected collectors Miles Collier, Manvendra
Singh Barwani and Derek Hill.
A complete calendar of events for the whole of Pebble Beach Automotive Week, including the full schedule for the forum with the latest information regarding speakers, times and dates, is available on the Concours website at www.pebblebeachconcours.net.
Paired with the forum will be the new Pebble Beach Classic Car Expo, located at The Spanish Bay Tennis Pavilion, where guests can peruse and purchase authentic and unusual vehicles from highly respected classic car dealers. It will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 14 through Saturday, August 16.
Pebble Beach RetroAuto will also be moving to the ballrooms of The Inn at Spanish Bay, providing a new and inviting space for event participants and guests. RetroAuto has already established itself as a well-curated marketplace for the true automotive enthusiast, showcasing rare collectables, historic automobilia, art and literature, as well as luxury items, technological tools and auto parts. The schedule for RetroAuto will mirror that of the classic car expo.
The Inn at Spanish Bay and The Lodge at Pebble Beach are both situated along the famed 17-Mile Drive in Del Monte Forest with the Pacific Ocean as backdrop. As part of the new Event layout and schedule, a cable car shuttle will be introduced to transport guests from one resort to the other Thursday through Saturday.
The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance began in tandem with the Pebble Beach Road Races back in 1950. When the winding roads of Del Monte Forest proved too dangerous, Laguna Seca was built to host those races and schedules soon diverged. For years the Pebble Beach Concours was on its own. It wasn’t until 1974 that historic races were once again paired with the concours,
but in recent decades automotive events surrounding the Concours—whether directly or indirectly tied to it—have multiplied in dramatic fashion.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (February 20, 2014) — Maserati, a marque renowned for its racing greats as well as road cars offering both elegance and sporting performance, takes center stage at the 64th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The event, often said to be the most intense collector car competition in the world, will be held on Sunday, August 17, at The Lodge at Pebble Beach.
Additional 2014 features range from rainbow-hued Ruxtons and antique steamers to the elegant coachwork of Fernandez et Darrin, innovative Tatras, postwar Rolls-Royce Phantoms, and fiery Ferrari 250 Testa Rossas.
“We’re just beginning to vet entry applications, and the range of features promises to be enticing,” said Sandra Button, Pebble Beach Concours Chairman. “I’m also really looking forward to working with Maserati to showcase the very best of their race and road cars.
“The history of this marque is entwined with the history of this Concours. Maseratis were often in the mix in the early Pebble Beach Road Races in the 1950s, and, to the surprise of many classic car enthusiasts, a Maserati Mistral Coupé took top honors as Best of Show at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 1968. It was the most recent postwar car to do so.”
The Maserati brothers focused for decades on building potent single seaters that could (and did) win races, racking up early victories in fierce competitions such as the Targa Florio and the Tripoli Grand Prix. The marque went on to record the only wins by an Italian manufacturer at the Indianapolis 500 and to garner the world championship in 1957 with Juan Manuel Fangio at the helm of a 250F. Models for regular road use were added to the Maserati lineup in the 1940s, and the marque soon began to pair with designers like Pininfarina and Giugiaro to create luxury cars with great power and finesse.
Other features at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours include the following:
Ruxton: An innovative automobile born of the dreams of two men — a brilliant engineer and a manipulative business mogul — who sought to bring a revolutionary front-drive vehicle into production at the start of the Great Depression. Of the estimated 96 cars manufactured, just 17 working examples remain, and a record number of them will gather together at the forthcoming Pebble Beach Concours.
Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa: These spirited racecars ruled the track from their introduction in 1957 through 1960, and they are now among the most desired collector cars. They will gather en masse at Pebble Beach before hitting the road on a reunion rally.
Fernandez et Darrin Coachwork: Years before American-born designer Howard Darrin developed the styling cue that became his signature — the Darrin “Dip,” wherein the beltline tapers down across the door before rising with the fenders — he paired with Argentinean-born financier J. Fernandez to create a series of salon-winning creations in Paris.
Steam Cars: Steam power was well developed long before the internal combustion engine was perfected, so many of the earliest cars were steam driven — and steam technology had strong adherents well into the 1920s. Several steam pioneers will take to the show field this year.
Tatra: This Czechoslovakian marque, one of the oldest auto manufacturers in the world, built cars that were unique in look and function. Chief engineer Hans Ledwinka was an early proponent of air-cooled engines, a rigid backbone chassis and independent suspension. Under his guidance, working in tandem with aerodynamicist and Graf Zeppelin designer Paul Jaray, Tatra built the world’s first truly aerodynamic production car, the Type 77, which presaged vehicles like the Bugatti Atlantic and the Volkswagen Beetle.
Rolls-Royce Phantom Postwar: After World War II, the few independent British coachbuilders who remained in business relied on Rolls-Royce and its customers for orders. The first Phantom IV went to then-Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1950, and orders from other royals and heads of state followed. Most agree styling reached its zenith with the Phantom V, introduced in 1959, and by the late 1960s the Phantom VI was the only chassis still made for custom coachwork. In 1991 the last Phantom built, a landaulet, was delivered to the Sultan of Brunei.
Eastern European Motorcycles will also be featured.
A current listing of all car classes planned for the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is posted online at www.pebblebeachconcours.net/pages/3008. Entry applications were due in January and are now being vetted by the Concours Selection Committee. The full committee meets in March to determine which cars will be invited to appear on the Concours show field. If you have a great car that you have not yet entered but still hope the committee will consider, please send a brief description of your car to entries@pebblebeachconcours.net.
