RM Sotheby’s Gathers Seven Decades of Ferrari’s Finest for Maranello Sale

BLENHEIM, ONTARIO, 11 August, 2017

RM Sotheby’s is thrilled to announce an incredible lineup of recent entries for its single-marque Ferrari – Leggenda e Passione sale, set for 9 September in partnership with Ferrari. Held at the legendary marque’s factory in Maranello, the auction celebrates Ferrari’s 70th anniversary year with automotive milestones across seven decades.

Highlights among recent entries for the exclusive event are led by a genuine, numbers-matching 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider by Scaglietti, chassis no. 1503 GT. One of the most desirable examples of the ultimate open Ferrari of its era, 1503 GT is offered from nearly two decades of single ownership, having seldom been shown over this time. Sporting a beautifully maintained restoration and with fascinating history, it is ready for enjoyment on the show field or the vintage rally circuit (Est. €7,500,000 – €9,500,000).

early 30 years down the road in Ferrari’s rich heritage, we saw the first in its unparalleled series of supercars, the 288 GTO. The 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO on offer at Maranello, chassis no. 57709, is arguably one of the finest and best preserved examples in existence. The 255th of just 272 ever built, the 288 GTO is virtually as-new throughout, having been purchased by its current owner in 1993 and stored ever since. Discovered earlier this year, the car has been carefully reconditioned and is beautifully preserved inside and out. Having covered a mere 729 km, finding another example like this is simply unrepeatable, making the car’s offering in September an opportunity not to be missed (Est. €3,250,000 – €4,000,000).

Additional featured highlights from across the decades include:

The Fifties

· 1950 Ferrari 195 Inter Coupé, chassis no. 0081 S (Est. €1,100,000 – €1,500,000);

· 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Coupé, chassis no. 0313 EU (Est. €2,800,000 – €3,400,000);

· 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza, chassis no. 0534 M (Est. €3,400,000 – €3,800,000);

· 1955 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II, chassis no. 8897 SF (Est. €1,600,000 – €2,300,000);

· 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I, chassis no. 0791 GT (Est. €4,900,000 – €5,700,000).

The Sixties and Seventies

· 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II, chassis no. 1779 GT (Est. €1,350,000 – €1,650,000);

· 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy, chassis no. 08111 (Est. €2,400,000 – €2,800,000);

· 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, chassis no. 09481 (Est. €1,800,000 – €2,200,000);

· 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS, chassis no. 07214 (Est. €375,000 – €450,000).

The Eighties, Nineties, and Today

· 1989 Ferrari F40, chassis no. 83572 (Est. €950,000 – €1,100,000);

· 1994 Ferrari 348 GT/C LM, chassis no. 97553 (Est. €390,000 – €450,000);

· 1994 Ferrari 333 SP, chassis no. 006 (Est. €2,800,000 – €3,300,000);

· 2004 Ferrari Enzo, chassis no. 136733 (Est. €1,800,000 – €2,000,000);

· 2012 Ferrari 599 GTO, chassis no. 174698 (Est. €425,000 – €500,000).

The 288 GTO will be on early preview at Ferrari’s Casa Ferrari display next week during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

RM Sotheby’s and Ferrari set Stage for Most Significant Single-Marque Sale in Auction History

Posted: 30.05.2017 / Source: RM Sotheby’s

BLENHEIM, ONTARIO, 30 May, 2017

RM Sotheby’s is thrilled to announce an historic sale held in partnership with one of the most revered marques the world over: Ferrari. The sale takes place during Ferrari’s 70th anniversary year, an extraordinary achievement in automotive history, and a major milestone in the marque’s rich heritage that will hold the attention of the global motoring community throughout 2017.

The collaboration will see RM Sotheby’s—the clear leader in the market for Ferraris at auction—join in the international year-long 70th anniversary celebrations. RM has successfully sold more examples than any other auction house, and proudly holds the record for four of the top 10 most valuable Ferraris ever offered for public sale. RM Sotheby’s and Ferrari have come together on numerous occasions in the past, including the 2007-2009 record-setting ‘Leggenda e Passione’ auctions held at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, events that cemented RM’s relationship and expertise with the marque. The strength of the partnership was proven once again in December 2016, with the charity auction of a unique LaFerrari at the Finali Mondiali at Daytona. The car achieved $7,000,000, with proceeds benefitting earthquake victims in Central Italy and, in the process, setting a record for a new car sold at auction.

“At RM Sotheby’s we are continually striving to offer our clients an experience that is second to none. Our partnership with Ferrari is a direct reflection of this crowning achievement. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, the sale represents a world-class and singular event, perhaps one of the most significant auctions ever held, in fact. We are deeply honored to hold this distinction and feel that this represents exactly what our customers expect from an association between such storied and historic brands as Ferrari and RM Sotheby’s”, says Rob Myers, CEO and Founder of RM Sotheby’s.

The partnership extends to several events throughout the anniversary year, culminating in the must-attend affair of the 2017 collector car calendar—an exclusive auction at the spiritual home of the marque—Maranello. Held 9 September at the Ferrari Factory, the auction will bring together an exclusive, curated selection of the greatest sports, GT and racing Ferraris ever built, celebrating pivotal moments in the marque’s history and unearthing some of the most valuable and sought-after examples on the planet. All entries for the sale will carry certification from the lauded Ferrari Classiche Department, with whom RM Sotheby’s enjoys a close relationship.

RM Sotheby’s has achieved incredible auction results to date across the full spectrum of Ferrari models; of the 660 million-dollar-plus cars sold in RM’s history, 40 percent are Ferraris. The upcoming event will build on this previous success in the sale of important Ferraris at auction, which accounts for nearly half of all examples sold for over $10,000,000 and is highlighted by: the ex-Works, ex-Juan Manuel Fangio 1956 Ferrari 290 MM, which commanded $28,050,000 at RM’s 2015 New York sale; the single-owner 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider, which achieved $27,500,000 at RM’s 2013 Monterey sale, maintaining the record for the most valuable road-going Ferrari sold at auction; and, the one-of-three 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale sold for $26,400,000 at the same event in 2014. RM Sotheby’s auction expertise and Ferrari’s brand, coupled with the historic Maranello backdrop, will bring together the world’s discerning collectors for the most significant single-marque sale in collector car auction history and an unforgettable weekend.

Once upon a time, August was a hot month for motor sport. Until a few years ago, the F1 calendar didn’t feature a mid-season break. It was quite common for the Hungarian Grand Prix to take place over the weekend known in Italy as “Ferragosto”, the nearest to the 15th August. And for us Italians, “Ferragosto” can only mean holiday time. Nevertheless, in ’98 for example, we put thoughts of the beach far behind us as we tackled qualifying in Budapest on 15th August and a day later, Schumacher and Ferrari went on to take one of the great Grand Prix wins.

Those were the days. An F1 team is part of a company and, as such, it has an obligation to allow its staff a rest period. From 2009, this break has been regulated, first of all by an agreement between the teams, who were then gathered under the umbrella of the Formula One Teams Association, which required that one comply with a moral obligation to stick to the rule. Then, in 2014, this agreement became part of the Sporting Regulations (Art.21.9.) It defined the minimum shutdown period as 14 days in the event that the gap between two consecutive races on the calendar be 24 days, as is the case this year between Hungary and Belgium, or 13 days, if the gap is only 17 days.

So what happens, or more correctly, what doesn’t happen in this break? The drivers make the most of it and go on holiday. The Ferrari duo of Kimi and Seb are planning to spend time with their respective families. And all work has to stop: no simulator, no wind tunnel and so forth. You could claim that today, with portable computers and smartphones, there’s nothing to stop people working at home. But the teams themselves are actually very strict about ensuring everyone adheres to the rules. One interesting point: a few years back, the idea was put forward that there should be a further break around the Christmas holidays. It was not approved, mainly because December and January are months that feature frenetic activity as teams rush to build their new cars.
