Derek Bell in his 1970 Ferrari 512. XX Programmes entertain the crowds

Goodwood, 28 June – On the 17th May 1970, Derek Bell drove his first Sports Car in an endurance race at the Spa 1000 Km. The car was a Ferrari 512 S, one of only 25 cars built to contest the Manufacturers’ World Championship in 1970 and 1971. The car was entered by Ecurie Francorchaps and Derek shared it with Belgian driver Hughes de Fierlant. With an all-alloy 5.0 litre V12 engine, generating 550hp, the 512 S had a top speed of over 212mph. Designed by Giacomo Calari as both a berlinetta and a spider, the car had a tubular spaceframe chassis with polycarbonate bodywork for a total weight of only 840kg.

Derek Bell started the Spa 1000 Km in 7th place, and finished 8th overall. He also then drove the 512 S at Le Mans, but this time it was a works entry with Ronnie Peterson as teammate, and again at the 9hrs of Kyalami in November again with the Ecurie Francorchamps. During the Spa 1000 Km, the car wore race number 23, which it wore again during the Festival of Speed when Derek drove the car in a special class dedicated to celebrating the career of one of the greatest Endurance Racers of all time. The car is currently held in a private collection and is not normally campaigned. However, as part of the Derek Bell Celebration at the 2015 Festival of Speed, the owner wanted to ensure that Derek had the chance to be reunited with the car that launched his career in Sports Cars.

The Festival of Speed was also the perfect showcase for Ferrari’s XX Programmes cars, from Corse Clienti, designed to develop new technology for future road cars. The XX programme was first launched in 2005 with the FXX, followed by the 599XX in 2010 and the FXX K in 2015 – with all three cars making their first appearance at the Festival of Speed, putting on a great show for the crowds. The XX cars were followed up the notoriously tricky hillclimb by the LaFerrari, F12berlinetta, 488 GTB and the California T, completing the “full set” of Ferrari sports cars at this year’s event. In fact, Ferrari’s presence in the Supercar Run paddock created an incredible buzz throughout the weekend, with a total of 96 cylinders and over 6,000CV entertaing the crowds in the Supercar Paddock.

Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari’s Head of Centre Stile, also participated as a Judge in the Style et Luxe Concours, which included several outstanding examples from Ferrari’s heritage, such as a beautiful Ferrari 212 Inter, entered by Fritz Kroymans, and a Ferrari 330 GT Vignale Shooting Brake which was entered by renowned Ferrari enthusiast, musician Jay Kay, leader of Jamiroquai. The winner of the Coach and Horses class was the outstanding 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast, which also was a strong contender for overall winner.

Gené demonstrates F10 F1 car

Goodwood, 28 June – Former Scuderia Ferrari F1 driver, René Arnoux, was reunited with the Prancing Horse at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend with a fantastic drive of the 599XX, one of several cars from the XX Programmes that Ferrari brought from Maranello to support the event. Arnoux drove for the famed Italian brand  from 1983 to the first race of  1985 season, with  three race wins and  four pole positions in his first season, helping Ferrari lift the Manufacturer’s World Championship for the 8th time.

The 599XX is part of Ferrari’s Corse Clienti XX Programmes which is an experimental laboratory for the company to develop and test new technology and innovations in partnership with the  most loyal and passionate clients. The 599XX is not homologated for road use and has not been designed to comply with any race regulations, allowing the engineers free reign to create a number of innovative solutions, such as the Base Bleed aerodynamics which are designed to reduce drag at the rear of the car. This developmental work can also be seen on the company’s latest mid-engined supercar, the 488 GTB which features a similar aerodynamic solution with air being channelled through the rear flanks of the car to reduce drag and increase downforce.

Ferrari also brought the 2010 F1 car to Goodwood, the F10, which is being driven this weekend by Scuderia Ferrari test driver, Marc Gené, who also spent time with the fans in the paddocks. Ferrari’s extensive display of cars at the event also included a Tailor Made FF, as well as the complete range of current products, including the California T which also competed in the challenging hillclimb.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed concludes today and Ferrari will once again be one of the main attractions at the Event.
