Mille Miglia 2017
Press Conference for the presentation at the Geneva International Motor Show

Posted: 08.03.2017 / Source: Mille Miglia

MILLE MIGLIA CELEBRATES 90 YEARS WITH 440 CLASSIC CARS FROM 5 CONTINENTS

After the laborious selection phase of the 705 applications from 41 countries, the official list of 440 competitors, representing 36 countries and 5 continents was presented at the International Motor Show. From Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 May, the race will pass through more than 200 municipal areas, 7 Italian regions and the Republic of San Marino.

Geneva, 8 March 2017: for its ninetieth anniversary, the Mille Miglia – the first edition of which was held in 1927 – presents the thirty-fifth re-evocation edition. The international presentation took place today in Geneva, traditionally a meeting place of different cultures and multi-ethnic and multi-denominational dialogue, in keeping with the atmosphere of international friendship that has always characterized the Freccia Rossa.

Confirming what Enzo Ferrari called the Mille Miglia – “the world’s unique traveling museum”, from Thursday 18 to Sunday, 21 May, the spectators to the four stages from Brescia to Rome and back can admire 440 vintage cars of extraordinary historical, technical and sporting value, from eighty-two different Car manufacturers, and hundreds of different models.

To complete this number, never before achieved by any other classic car competition, there will be a further ten cars belonging to a ” Military Category”, driven by senior officers of the different Italian Armed Forces, as happened in the Mille Miglia of 1952.

These 440 design and mechanical masterpieces, built before 1957 (the year of the last speed edition), will create an unrivalled automotive event, along approximately 1,700 km of Italian roads. This will be made even more fascinating by a further 150 cars – produced after 1958 – participants in the “Ferrari Tribute to Mille Miglia” and “Mercedes-Benz Mille Miglia Challenge”, reserved for mostly modern cars of the two Manufacturers.

FROM COLLECTIONS AND MUSEUMS, PRICELESS TREASURES AT THE START

Among the many reasons that make the Mille Miglia incomparably refined, exclusive and prestigious is that it is the only way possible to admire, all at the same time, priceless treasures that have written the most beautiful pages of international motoring. Among the Museums that will send their cars to Brescia, there are Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche.

Among the vehicles belonging to private individuals or museums, ninety-two cars will be returning to Brescia after having taken part in at least one edition of the Mille Miglia, between 1927 and 1957.

The selection, carried out by a panel of international experts and scrutineers, was performed on 705 applications from 41 countries.

Among those chosen, the most represented brand is Alfa Romeo with 46 cars (chosen from 72 entries), followed by Fiat with 36 (out of 61 entries) and two other houses with 35: Lancia (54) and Mercedes-Benz (49). Following on, there are Bugatti with 23 (all entries) and Jaguar with 21 (47), the same as Porsche (35); the Ferraris lined up at the start will be 15 (out of 17 entries), 14 Aston Martins (34), 13 O.M.s (Of course, all cars of this brand, built in Brescia, have been accepted), 12 BMWs and 11 Maseratis. The starting line-up is completed by other brands, for a total of 82 Manufacturers.

Cars of which at least one model had been entered in the Mille Miglia speed editions, from 1927 to 1957, have been accepted. These cars must be one of the models on the list of candidate cars, published on the official website of the competition. In order to be selected, the entered cars had to have at least one of these documents: Fiche ACI-CSAI (Italian Motor Sport Commission), the FIA HTP (Historic technical passport issued by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) or FIVA ID (Identity Card of Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens).

MILLE MIGLIA IN ALL LANGUAGES

With entries received from 41 countries from all continents, the crews admitted to the start are from 36 countries. Italy continues to be the most represented country, with 236 starters (26.8% of the total) selected out of 331 entries (23.5%).

For the first time in all 35 re-enactments, the second country in terms of number of participations will not be Germany this year, surpassed by the Netherlands and equalled by the UK.

The acceptance of 104 Dutch citizens (out of 159 entries), 49 from Belgium (69) and 10 from Luxembourg (out of 11) has confirmed the steady growth of the Benelux countries in recent years.

69 participants (out of 116 entries) will arrive from Germany, which has dropped to third place, as well as 69 subjects of Her Majesty (115 entries) from the UK.

Enthusiasts from Switzerland, with 46 accepted (out of 67), are also in the rise, as are those from Japan, with 34 accepted out of 34 entries.

The participation from the United States of America with 42 (out of 61), and Argentina with 13 (out of 18) has changed little

Note that, with the number of crews composed of representatives of different nationalities increasing each year, the calculation refers to individuals.

It should however be considered that – at the time of printing of this press release – of the 1,410 members of the 705 crews of the same number of registered cars, the nationalities of 214 people, whose identity has not yet been communicated, is not known.

A BREATHTAKING RIDE BETWEEN HISTORICAL TOWN CENTRES AND NATURE RESERVES

The most famous road race of all time will take place from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 May 2017. The date, as per tradition, is one week before the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix.

Mille Miglia 2017 will continue to be run over four stages. The preview (Tuesday 16 May) will be the Trofeo Roberto Gaburri, a regularity race with about a hundred cars taking part. After checks and stamping, as always carried out at the Fiera di Brescia and, subsequently in Piazza della Vittoria, the Mille Miglia 2017 will start from Viale Venezia, at 14h30 on Thursday 18 May. Respecting the tradition started in 1927, the route starts and ends in Brescia, passing through half of Italy before and after the halfway mark in Roma. From Brescia, after the classic drive past Lake Garda and passing Verona, the cars will head for Vicenza, closing the first leg in Padova.

The following day, Friday 19 May, the second leg will take competitors to Rome. In order to accept all the requests on an alternating basis, in 2017 Freccia Rossa will not travel south along the Adriatic coast but will move inland, through Umbria. The classic cars will leave Padova from 06h30 and will pass through Ferrara, Ravenna, San Marino, Urbino, Gubbio, Perugia and Terni. Arrival in Rome is planned at around 21h30, with the parade in Via Veneto and the customary tour of the eternal city at night.

Saturday 20, will see the start at 07h00, the route leaving the Capital will remain unchanged until Tuscany. The most traditional route of the race will include Ronciglione, Viterbo, Radicofani and Siena, where the spectacular parade in Piazza del Campo is not to be missed. From here, in answer to repeated requests, Mille Miglia 2017 will veer north passing Montecatini Terme and Pistoia, crossing the Appennines at the Abetone Pass, to then travel along the Po valley from Reggio Emilia to Modena.

The third leg will end in Parma, which always offers a warm welcome to the participants. From here, on the morning of Sunday 21 May, the start will be at 07h30. From the Po Valley, the long Freccia Rossa convoy will drive through Cremona and Mantova. There will be a break for lunch in Rovato, where participants will be able to taste local delicacies such as the characteristic manzo all’olio (beef with oil). The final leg will see the teams reach the finishing line in Brescia.

From 14h30 onwards, for the umpteenth time, Viale Venezia in Brescia will see the checkered flag coming down on the Freccia Rossa.

The programme and the route of the Ferrari Tribute to Mille Miglia and the Mercedes-Benz Mille Miglia Challenge will be the same as the Mille Miglia, except for the start and arrival of the first leg, Thursday 18 May, which will be respectively in Desenzano del Garda (from 13h45) and in Ferrara (from 21h30).

THE NOVELTIES OF THE THIRTY-FIFTH EDITION

The main novelties of the 2017 edition, besides the celebratory trademark for the ninetieth anniversary, include the sporting aspect, with a substantial increase in the number timed trials, which increase to 112, plus 18 readings in 7 set average tests. The final classification, after the application of coefficients (unchanged following the changes done last year) will comprise 130 timed stages. Among these, for the first time, Mille Miglia will hold a few “showcase trials” in the squares of Verona, Castelfranco Veneto, Ferrara, Pistoia, Busseto, and Canneto sull’Oglio. The last timed trials of Mille Miglia 2017, decisive for the ranking, will take place in an extraordinary setting: the runways of the 6th Squadron Tornadoes at Ghedi Military Airport.

STATEMENTS BY THE ORGANISERS

Piergiorgio Vittorini, President of the Automobile Club of Brescia, pointed out that, just as the Mille Miglia, also the ACI of Brescia turns 90 years old in 2017: «The symbiosis between the Body that created it and its Freccia Rossa is indissoluble. The first “Mille Miglia Cup” took place on the 26 March 1927, just two months after the founding of the Automobile Club of Brescia. As part of the events to celebrate the dual ninetieth anniversary, an exhibition in the heart of Brescia will be opened, which will explain Mille Miglia as a part of that myth of speed which lives in our land since the beginning of the Twentieth Century and which places the Automobile Club of Brescia in the main role».

The President of 1000 Miglia Srl, Aldo Bonomi, stated: «In June 2012 we decided to establish 1000 Miglia Srl, a company wholly owned by the Automobile Club of Brescia, which this year will manage the big motoring event for the fifth consecutive year. The recent appointment of the company’s Board of Directors for the next three years will allow us to start a new cycle that combines many traditions – sporting, historical, cultural and human – of Freccia Rossa with a modern business management outlook on an international scale. This is a formidable base on which to base a future of continued success for our Mille Miglia, the world-famous race from Brescia ».

Franco Gussalli Beretta, Vice-president of 1000 Miglia Srl, explained that: «The brand with the Freccia Rossa (Red Arrow) can be translated into a lifestyle, a trend capable of combining the heritage of the race with a fun, sophisticated, inclusive and contemporary way of life. The celebratory logo of the ninetieth birthday brings together precise iconographic symbols of the Freccia Rossa (Red Arrow): the connection between the numbers “9” and “0” represents the symbol of infinity, of perpetual motion on a road that ideally travels through Italy. In a tribute to two different motor races, yesterday speed, and regularity today, the hub of a wheel and a chronograph button appear in the logo».

Brescia, 7 February 2017: in the year of its ninetieth anniversary, the thirty-fifth edition of the re-evocation of the race created in 1927 was presented, the race that Enzo Ferrari called “a unique travelling museum”.

Huge enthusiasm and vastly increased participation requests: 695 participation requests from 41 Countries in 5 Continents.

The Mille Miglia 2017 route varies slightly compared to the 2016 edition: there is great interest in the four-stage race which crosses the historical centres of some of the most charming cities in Italy.

From Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 May, the race will travel through more than 200 municipalities and 7 regions in Italy, as well as the Republic of San Marino.

Among the novelties, worthy of mention are the “showcase trials” to be held in some historic squares, by the 440 accepted cars.

There will also be celebrations to remember the 24 original editions of the race, which took place from 1927 to 1957.

The race that will take place from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 May 2017 will be the thirty-fifth re-evocation of the Mille Miglia, the most famous road race of all time, ninety years after the first of the 24 editions of the speed race, from 1927 to 1957.

The celebratory trademark of this ninetieth anniversary groups together the distinctive symbols of our history: such as the connection between the numbers “9” and “0”, representing the symbol of infinity, perpetual motion along a road that ideally crosses Italy. Furthermore, in tribute to the two different automobile races, the speed race of the past and the regularity race of the present. The logo also incorporates the hub of a wheel and a stopwatch button.

For the fifth year running, 1000 Miglia Srl will be running the great automobile event. The company is a subsidiary of Automobile Club Brescia.

The enthusiasm for the most admired “travelling museum” in the world continues to spread to enthusiasts on all five continents. Registrations for Mille Miglia 2017 have continued to increase. The examining committee will inspect 695 vehicles, all manufactured from 1927 to 1957: the list of the 440 vehicles accepted will be revealed in one month’s time, at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Next May, Brescia will once again experience the pomp and splendour that made it the capital of motor racing: over and above the various initiatives to celebrate the ninetieth anniversary, the 2017 edition will begin with the preview of Tuesday 16 May. The city streets will be the backdrop for the Roberto Gaburri Trophy, a regularity race which will have about one hundred participants.

In 2017, Mille Miglia will continue to be run over four stages. After checks and stamping, which will, as always, take place at Fiera di Brescia and proceed to Piazza della Vittoria, the start of the Mille Miglia 2017 will be from Viale Venezia, at 14:30 on Thursday 18 May.

In keeping with tradition, which began in 1927, the route will start and end in Brescia, crossing half of Italy, with the turning point in Rome.

The route is changed every year in order to allow Mille Miglia to return to areas it has not been to for a few years.

From Brescia, after the classic drives past Garda Lake, and after passing Verona, the 440 cars in Mille Miglia will head toward Vicenza, ending off the first stage in Padova.

The day after, 19 May, the second stage will take the competitors to Rome. In order to take into account all the requests and in compliance with the idea of alternating, in 2017 Freccia Rossa will not follow the Adriatic Coast southwards, but will move towards the hinterland, crossing Umbria. Leaving from Padova at 6.30, the vintage cars will pass through Ferrara, Ravenna, San Marino, Urbino, Gubbio, Perugia and Terni. Arrival in Rome is envisaged around 21h15, with the parade in Via Veneto and the customary nocturnal tour of the heart of the city.

Saturday 20 May, the day will begin at 6.30, the route from the Capital will remain unchanged up to Tuscany. This is the most classic part of the route and will cross through Ronciglione, Viterbo, Radicofani and Siena, with the indispensable show in Piazza del Campo. From here, in answer to various requests, Mille Miglia 2017 will travel northwards passing through Montecatini Terme and Pistoia, crossing the Apennines along the Passo dell’Abetone, descending onto the plane from Reggio Emilia to Modena.

The third stage will end in Parma, which always warmly welcomes the participants. From here on the morning of Sunday 21 May, the day will start at 7.00.

Travelling through the Pianura Padana, the long line of Freccia Rossa vehicles will cross Cremona and Mantova. Continuing in its promotion of the territory around Brescia, with its characteristic attractions and products, lunchtime will be spent in Rovato, where the competitors will be able to taste delicacies such as the traditional manzo all’olio (Beef with oil). Arrival on the final leg will lead the teams onto the ramp to take the chequered flag in Brescia.

The programme and route of the Ferrari Tribute to Mille Miglia and the Mercedes-Benz Mille Miglia Challenge will be the same as that for Mille Miglia, with the exception of the start and arrival of the first stage, on Thursday 18 May, which will be in Desenzano del Garda (from 13h45) and in Ferrara (from 21h00) respectively.

The main novelties of the 2017 edition will concern the competitive aspect with a considerable increase in the number of time trials, which increase to 112, plus 18 readings in 7 set average tests. The final classification, after the application of coefficients (unchanged following the changes done last year) will comprise a total of 130 timed stages.

STATEMENTS BY THE SPEAKERS

Piergiorgio Vittorini, President of Automobile Club Brescia, stated that « Mille Miglia is a heritage of history and tradition which Italy proudly exhibits to the world. It encompasses many aspects: the value of history, the ability of uniting Italians with pride in an Italian tradition and the ability of attracting thousands of tourists to our country, captivated by the fascinating spectacle of the “most beautiful race in the world ».

The President of 1000 Miglia Srl, Aldo Bonomi, reminded those present that «the Freccia Rossa trade mark, the immense heritage of ACI Brescia, has grown because of the excellent results of 1000 Miglia Srl. The four stages of the race along the roads of Italy mask the careful and intense work done by one company, an extraordinary undertaking, where an entire year of work must be put into place in the space of a few days. If this sports event has reached international fame for efficiency and good organisation, it is due above all to the achievements of management over the last four years. Mille Miglia is a great race, it is history in motion, but not only: Mille Miglia is a vision of the whole, unending planning and work in order to achieve the continuous growth and improvement of a great brand. It is a distinctive way of working as a company ».

Franco Gussalli Beretta, Vice-president of 1000 Miglia Srl, spoke about a few aspects concerning Freccia Rossa: «In these nine decades, Mille Miglia has become a symbol of Brescian excellence envied by all. It is one of the most successful Italian brands in the world. The trademark bearing the Red Arrow can translate into a lifestyle, a trend able to combine the heritage of the race with a fun-filled way of life, sophisticated, inclusive and contemporary. Making the trademark contemporary means interacting with sponsors and licensees that are able to consolidate its position in the “luxury market” without setting aside its deep roots in the local community and where the fundamental values are a common heritage. The 90th anniversary, starting from the first edition in the now-distant 1927, will be an opportunity for transforming the concept of speed – understood as being the ability to overcome time and space – into one of dynamism, experimentation and contamination ».

Alberto Piantoni, Managing Director of 1000 Miglia Srl, said: «Crossing The Future – this will be the key phrase that will stand out in the forthcoming editions of Mille Miglia which is known as the most beautiful race in the world, but is also a project and a platform from which to launch, in the world, Made in Italy products, its communities, led by the that from Brescia, and its values. “Crossing The Future” is a direction in which to travel: Giannino Marzotto – winner of the 1950 and 1953 editions – said: “Mille Miglia has been the portrait of technical, social and human innovation”. I think that the promise contained in the original idea can still today represent its main value ».

Giuseppe Cherubini, Vice-president of the Mille Miglia 2017 Operations Committee, in presenting the outline of the 2017 edition, said: «In their trip from Brescia to Padova, to Roma, to Parma and finally back again to Brescia, the competitors will see a scenario of art and history pass before them, which can only be seen in the squares of some of the most beautiful cities in Italy. Mille Miglia 2017 will offer an exclusive mix of this in a long, breathtaking trip. One the one side it will highlight the most genuine corners of old Italy, with its history, on the other it will offer amazingly beautiful areas, crossing through natural parks and unspoiled nature ».

Paolo Mazzetti, Secretary of the Mille Miglia 2017 Operations Committee, mentioned the ninety-year history of Mille Miglia, from the twenty-four original speed editions held from 1927 to 1940 and then from 1947 to 1957, up to the first historical re-evocation in 1977, repeated in 1982. The drivers, vehicles and dates of those legendary years have been collected in a small celebratory publication that was distributed to those present at the press conference.
