The 3.9-litre V8 takes the International Engine of the Year Award for the third year running

A record number of six awards

Stuttgart, 5 June 2018 –  The latest iteration of Ferrari’s turbo-charged V8 that equips, in various forms, all Ferrari’s V8-engined cars, has been nominated the best engine in the world for the third year running in the 2018 International Engine of the Year Awards.

In this, the award’s 20th anniversary edition, Ferrari took no fewer than six awards, the highest number for any manufacturer in any one year, bringing the total of Ferrari’s trophies up to 27, a record number of wins for any sports car company.

Along with the overall Engine of the Year honour, the 720-cv 3.9-litre V8 that powers the new 488 Pista also took the 3-litre to 4-litre class, the Performance Engine category and the special nomination for the ‘Best of the Best’, with the 68 international judges asked to vote for the top engine from among all the winners over the last 20 years.

“In the 488 GTB, the 3.9-litre eight-cylinder was a near-perfect example of a high-performance turbocharged engine, setting the bar so high that it swept aside rival powertrains,” said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the IEOTY Awards. “But redeveloped and tweaked for the 488 Pista, the best engine in the world just got better. Without doubt, we’re looking at an engineering masterclass from Ferrari. No turbo lag, beautiful delivery, raw emotion, a furious growl and so much power – this Ferrari V8 is a work of art.”

Crowning Ferrari’s record-breaking year, the naturally-aspirated 800-cv 6.5-litre V12 powering the 812 Superfast also won two awards: the Above 4-litre class and, due to it being comprehensively re-engineered from the 6.3-litre unit that equipped the F12berlinetta with 75% new components, the Best New Engine category.

Maurizio Arrivabene: ”Without a doubt, today’s win is down to a very good car and a great drive from Seb. The team, both at the track and back in Maranello, has worked hard and methodically, preparing the car, which right from Saturday’s qualifying proved to be very quick. The tyres responded very well to the strategies we devised. It’s a shame that Kimi’s mistake in qualifying affected his whole race. There is still a long way to go in the championship and we have to continue giving it our all. I take this opportunity to thank our fans and customers who never fail to show us their support and our sponsors and technical partners, especially Shell, for their support in our development programme.”

Sebastian Vettel: ”This win is very important for our tifosi and for our team, today is a special day. 40 years ago Gilles won here, then 14 years ago it was Michael and I was thinking of that today. At the start I tried to build up a margin, I was happy with my first lap and then the safety car came out and I had to start over again. During my last 10 laps I prayed that my car would not develop a problem until the end! Points are always important but today this win means a lot and not just in terms of Championship. The season is still so long and there are many races ahead. The main thing is that our car is strong and stays like that, so that we can fight.”

Kimi Raikkonen: “Yesterday’s mistake in qualifying did not put ourselves in a good position for the race. Overtaking was very difficult here; I tried to get ahead of Hamilton after my pit stop, but it did not work out. Then It was even difficult to get close enough to him to open the DRS. It was a surprise, because on this track you would expect to see overtaking and fights, instead it was a similar story to two weeks ago in Monaco. The race was boring and not much happened. We decided to stay out a little bit longer on our first set of tyres and I don’t think that cost us any position: it was our only option to try something different.”

Canadian Grand Prix – “Great job, great!”

Seb takes third win and is back leading the championship. Kimi sixth.

Montreal, 10 June –Scuderia Ferrari won the Canadian GP to end a 14 year drought at this track. Seb Vettel is now back in the lead of the championship, while Kimi Raikkonen brought home 8 points for sixth place. A weekend that started with a few difficulties was turned around thanks to team work, a fact Seb was quick to underline.

Seb got away well from pole, while Kimi had Hamilton in his sights, but had to lift off and lost a place. The opening lap saw a collision between Hartley and Stroll, which brought out the Safety Car, which is a classic Montreal feature. Four laps later the race was on again and the number 5 Ferrari pulled out a bit of a lead to ward off the threat of an undercut. At this point, Seb was the only one lapping under the 1’16” barrier and all he had to say on the radio was that the tyres were fine.

The strategy was based on a single stop to take on the hardest compound available here, the Supersoft and then run to the flag. So Kimi also upped his pace a bit. Seb locked his front wheels and lost a second and then had some traffic to deal with. But once he’d cleared the backmarkers, he banged in a super third sector to set the fastest lap on lap 29.

Kimi also upped his pace prior to his pit stop in the hope of attacking Hamilton. He came in on lap 33 and had his rival in his sights, but lost time lapping Sirotkin.

Out in front, Sebastian led by around 6 seconds. Raikkonen set the fastest lap and was back in the hunt. On lap 37, Bottas pitted and that was the sign for the Scuderia to also bring in Vettel and the mechanics did a good job on his car.

After that it was a race run at arms length, with Seb managing his lead, the tyres and fuel consumption and paying particular attention to the backmarkers. Behind Seb, Bottas had to fend off a hard charging Verstappen.

“Tell them not to wave the chequered flag, it’s not over yet,” said Seb on the radio. He was right, as there was still a lap to go, the best one of the whole weekend.

Canadian Grand Prix – “This pole means a lot to us”

Seb over the moon after Qualifying, Kimi unsure about what happened

Montreal, June 9 – Every metre counts on this 4.361 Km long circuit where half a tenth of a second can make a lot of difference. Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel got the best out of it today and his effort resulted in pole number 217 for the team, the 4th in the season so far. Conversely, a small mistake on his very last run, cost Kimi Raikkonen dear and he had to settle for fifth place when a much better result had looked on the cards. However,  the substantial performance improvement that the SF71H has shown since the first day of practice means there’s a lot of potential to be explored in tomorrow’s race.

“Pole position is always important”, said Seb “and for Scuderia Ferrari this track and this country means a lot, as this is the place where Gilles Villeneuve came from. That’s why I am very happy to have qualified on pole. It’s a great result for all the team, but I think I could have been even faster. I was quite happy with my first run in Q3 but I knew there was something more in the car for the first part of the lap. So I tried it all but I wasn’t sure until the end if it was enough. We have  definitely improved since yesterday, I was very happy with the car today . Choosing the Ultrasofts for the start of the race was a pretty straightforward decision for us, now we have to do our best on Sunday!”

Teammate Kimi Raikkonen was obviously less happy: “On my last try in Q3, I suddenly had a lot of understeer  entering Turn 2, I  struggled to turn the car round. At that point I had no choice but  to try and get out of it as quickly as possible , but obviously I was off the line and my lap finished there. What happened was a bit odd,  my car had been working well all day. I’m sure there was more to come today, and the end result is not what we were looking for. Tomorrow is a different day though, we’ll see what happens. For sure it will be tricky, with different tires on different cars in the front. It’s difficult to have a clear picture of how it will pan out, but we believe  we made the right choice for the start of the race”.

Seb heads the field, with Kimi on third row

Montreal, 9 June – Sebastian Vettel drove his Ferrari SF71H to pole position this afternoon at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Canada. On the way, he set a new track record of 1’10”764. It is Seb’s 54th career pole, the ninth with the Scuderia and it is number 217 for the team. Kimi Raikkonen made a mistake on his final run and that meant he could do no better than fifth fastest in 1’11”095. Both Scuderia Ferrari drivers ran the Hypersoft and Ultrasoft tyres and having used the latter in Q2, these are the tyres on which they will start the race, which gets underway at 14h10 (20h10 CET.)

Canadian Grand Prix – “We didn’t get all the answers”

Seb and Kimi predict further improvement for tomorrow

Montreal, June 8 – A very mixed picture emerged from the first day of practice at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where Kimi Raikkonen was in second place on the timesheets and Seb Vettel managed fifth best after losing some time in the garage and then being hampered by a red flag and traffic on his fast runs. The Canadian circuit is notorious for featuring strong track evolution as the weekend progresses, so it is not easy to predict what the future holds.

“We’re not far off,” was Seb’s comment, “although I am not entirely happy yet and there’s still some work to do. In the end I didn’t do many laps today and I think we were running a bit late. It is difficult to get to know all the answers, I think we need some more time to get everything together and then we’ll see what happens. We tried various things, but there’s still something we have to work on. I didn’t get into the rhythm, but tried to go through as much of the programme as we could. In the end, we need more time to get a better picture of the situation. Hopefully, putting everything together can help us tomorrow. Now we’ll stay focused on the work to do”.

“This track is not the easiest to get things where you want them,” added Kimi. “It’s not straightforward and we expected that. It’s very bumpy, not just with all the bumps, but also with the kerbs to ride over. The combination of low downforce and low grip can make it very difficult. As for the Hypersoft tyres, at least we have a better idea of how they work. They’re good on one lap and then last quite a few more. We’ve been improving during the day and that proves that we’re going in the right direction. For sure we have some work ahead of us, but I was a bit happier at the end of the session”.

Following a crash for Renault driver Carlos Sainz at the exit to turn 7, the session was red flagged so that debris could be removed from the track. The Finn ran Ultrasoft and Hypersoft tyres, while the German used all three compounds, the Supersoft, Ultrasoft and Hypersoft.

The final free practice session takes place tomorrow at 11h00, 17h00 CET.

Session given over to testing: Seb 4th and Kimi 6th fastest

Montreal, 8 June –Sunny and windy conditions greeted the drivers for the first free practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix at the circuit named after Gilles Villeneuve. The two SF71Hs took to the track with various new parts, both aerodynamic to suit this low downforce track and also some mechanical changes to elements of the Power Unit. The 90 minute session was red flagged at one point as the Ferrari drivers focused on various types of test and, come the end, Sebastian was fourth fastest in 1’13”574 and Kimi was sixth in 1’13”727, both times set on the Hypersoft tyre. The second session gets underway at 20h00 CET.

Kimi and Seb reflect on the ‘superfast’ challenge ahead

Montreal, June 7 – Scuderia Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel arrived at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this morning – in the case of Seb, riding a bike – and now, they are all set for the challenge on one of the few remaining ‘superfast’ tracks on the calendar.

“This is quite a special place”, says Kimi “where you need a good top speed, but the most important thing is to have a good ride over the kerbs; it’s about compromising the top speed through the slowest part and the braking. It’s the first track of the year that is quite different from the others. Compared to Monaco, here you have less chances to go off track and hit the wall, but there are places you can easily lose the car and end up in the barrier, because the kerbs are quite rough here and the chicanes are taken at quite high speed. Obviously you don’t want to waste time going off the track and missing part of a session, but it’s part of the game. You want to push as much as you feel it’s ok for that moment, especially in qualifying and the race. The rest is just about figuring things out and trying, making sure that you have the right feeling to go as fast as you can. It will be interesting to see how the Hypersoft tyres will behave at this track; I tried them for a couple of runs in the winter test , but obviously the conditions are different now. I’m sure over one lap they will be very good, but how long they will last will depend on many things. It’s been very close between everybody in the past races, so I don’t expect the situation to be completely different all of a sudden. It’s impossible to know now what will happen over the weekend; tomorrow we’ll start driving and get the first feelings and then will go from there. Hopefully we’ll be there in the fight”.

Seb’s comments reflect his teammate’s point of view: “Compared to last year, we have another car and the approach is, of course, also different. It is hard to make any prediction about this weekend. A lot can depend on what the other teams can do here and on the weather as well, as it might be raining. The track is a little bit different from any other, but we think the engine can play a role here. So, let’s see where we are. We have brought some updates here, which I am sure everyone does at some point along the season: so far, we’ve had a good and efficient car on the straights and this should help. There are a couple of tricky points, but I like this track. Unlike Monaco, which is not the best place for overtaking, I think it should be different here. However, tires play a bigger role this year. We’ve done a good job so far, but there’s still a long way to go”.

Canadian Grand Prix – 40 years on

Montreal and memories of Gilles Villeneuve

There are several unusual elements to an old photo from 40 years ago. For starters, the winner is wearing a heavy jacket over his race suit and instead of champagne, a magnum of beer features in the celebration. It was a weekend of rain and arctic cold and it might have been even more strange, as the original idea for this Canadian Grand Prix, the first staged in Montreal, was that it was originally meant to be held on the following Monday, Thanksgiving day. But even back in 1978, TV was all-important and the race ran on Sunday.

But maybe, the strangest thing about this short, oval shaped track, with its layout cut by chicanes and built alongside the Olympic Rowing basin among the greenery of the Ile Notre Dame, skirting the Saint Lawrence River, was that apparently, the drivers didn’t like it. There were mutterings that it was built specifically to suit the local man, the daredevil Gilles Villeneuve. True or not, he won the race on Sunday, his first F1 win, at the wheel of the Scuderia Ferrari T3. He drove like a demon to catch Jones and future team-mate Scheckter, before inheriting the lead after Jarier retired.

Gilles has gone, but the truth is, the likes of him always stay with us a little bit. And the track, the one no liked at first, is now considered one of the classics on the championship calendar. And of course, it bears his name: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Ferrari Challenge Europe at Misano – Victory for Cheung, Cuhadaroglu, Nielsen and Wohlwend

Misano Adriatico, 8 June 2018 – Eric Cheung, Murat Cuhadaroglu, Nicklas Nielsen and Fabienne Wohlwend triumphed on the first day of the fourth round of the 2018 Ferrari Challenge Europe season at Misano.

Coppa Shell. The day’s racing kicked off with the Coppa Shell, which took place at sunset and was an exciting and spectacular race. Christophe Hurni (Team Zenith Sion-Lausanne) jumped the start and was punished with a drive-through. The lead then passed to poleman Erich Prinoth (Ineco-MP Racing), who was followed by Eric Cheung (Formula Racing), Manuela Gostner (Ineco-MP Racing) and Vladimir Hladik (Baron Motorsport). There was no change until mid-race when Prinoth spun out, having to start again from fourth. This left the way open for Cheung, Gostner and Hladik. Thomas Gostner (Ineco-MP Racing), fifth up to that point, and his daughter Corinna Gostner, were hit respectively by Giuseppe Ramelli (Rossocorsa-Pellin Racing) and Agata Smolka (Rossocorsa). Hurni climbed up to eighth while Tommy Lindroth (Baron Motorsport), in his one 100th Challenge race, and Fons Scheltema (Kessel Racing), in his 200th, finished ninth and tenth. Despite the result, Prinoth still tops the championship standings although Cheung has pulled much closer.

Shell Am. Giuseppe Ramelli seemed to have notched up his first career win in the Coppa Shell Am. Driving the 488 Challenge of Rossocorsa-Pellin Racing, he performed impeccably from start to finish. However after the race was considered responsible for a contact with Thomas Gostner and was hit with a 25-second penalty dropping down to sixth. Turkey’s Murat Cuhadaroglu (Kessel Racing) won the race to close the gap with championship leader, Sweden’s Ingvar Mattsson, who started from pole but was third over the line. Alexander Nussbaumer (Formula Racing) took second.

Trofeo Pirelli. The Trofeo Pirelli race took place at night. At the start, poleman Nicklas Nielsen pulled away from the competition helped by the fierce duel between David Fumanelli (Rossocorsa) and Bjorn Grossmann (Octane 126). The Formula Racing driver crossed the line more than six seconds ahead of Fumanelli and Grossmann. Nielsen tops the championship standings.

Pirelli Am. Fabienne Wohlwend is letting nothing get in her way at the moment. The 20-year-old from Liechtenstein, winner of Race-2 at Spa, dominated from qualifying in the 488 Challenge of Octane 126. Like Nielsen, Wohlwend also benefited from the battle that raged behind her involving Tommaso Rocca (Rossocorsa), Martin Nelson (Scuderia Autoropa) and Chris Froggatt (Ferrari GB – H.R. Owen). The three fought it out until the last lap, when Froggatt, who overtook Nelson after the midway point, passed Rocca to seize second place. The second set of races are on Saturday at 8 pm and 10:15 pm.

Misano Adriatico, 6 June 2018 – The Ferrari Challenge Europe is all set for round four at Misano Adriatico track. Unusually, this weekend’s races are all at night, kicking off on Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and 10:15 pm.

Special guest. Andrea Bertolini will be race advisor at Misano. The Sassuolo driver is preparing to take to the track in the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the wheel of an LMP2 class prototype. Bertolini triumphed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the GTE-Am class in 2015 together with Russians Victor Shaytar and Aleksey Basov.

Trofeo Pirelli. Just 16 points separate Nicklas Nielsen and Bjorn Grossmann in the Trofeo Pirelli. The Dane of Formula Racing and the German of Octane 126 have so far shared the spoils except for Race 1 at Spa-Francorchamps, won by an extraordinary Florian Merckx. Chris Froggatt is comfortably ahead in the Trofeo Pirelli Am, although Fabienne Wohlwend is ready to do battle after her victory in Race 2 in Belgium.

Coppa Shell. The Coppa Shell sees a very open fight between leader Erich Prinoth (Ineco-MP Racing) and pursuers Christoph Hurni (Team Zenith Sion-Lausanne), Eric Cheung (Formula Racing) and Thomas Gostner. After a one-two at Mugello Prinoth limited the damage in the next two rounds while Hurni and Cheung put in good performances at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps to put themselves back in the running for the title. Gostner (Ineco-MP Racing) is making consistency his strong point. In the Coppa Shell Am Ingvar Mattsson (Scuderia Autoropa) tops the standings 18 points in front of Murat Cuhadaroglu (Kessel Racing) and 18.5 ahead of Alexander Nussbaumer (Formula Racing).

Maranello, 31 May 2018 – The fourth round of the Ferrari Challenge Europe 2018 season is less than a week away. The championship moves to Misano Adriatico, near Rimini, a track particularly famous for motorcycling, but that is sure to put on an exciting show for car enthusiasts.

Unusual format. Unlike the other race weekends, the Misano event will take place at night. For the second time in its history, the Challenge Europe will see two days of nighttime races. Nearly forty 488 Challenges will battle it out in two categories: Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell.

Friday and Saturday. As they are taking place at night the races will be held on Friday and Saturday 8 and 9 June, kicking off at 8:00 pm for the Coppa Shell and 10:15 pm for the Trofeo Pirelli. This gives Riviera holidaymakers a wonderful opportunity to round off their day at the seaside with a trip to see the Ferraris on track.

Well-stocked paddock. As always in the Ferrari Challenge the show won’t only take place on track. From the tests on Wednesday, the paddock of the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host a series of attractions worthy of a visit in themselves. The entire range will be on show to the public, including the new Portofino and 812 Superfast. The extraordinary Ferrari 488 Pista, Maranello’s latest special series, will also take a bow in a dedicated hospitality area. The Ferrari Store, also in the paddock, will be selling Ferrari promotional items and merchandise.

Andrea Bertolini. Special race advisor, Andrea Bertolini, will join the drivers for the weekend. Bertolini is just back from the 1000 km of Paul Ricard and is all set for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The experienced driver from Emilia will help the race officials in the management of the four races.

Challenge APAC – Au and Dicker dominate whole round, Hanna win in Race 2

Shanghai, 27 May 2018 – Ferrari Racing Days closed its spectacular programs in Shanghai International Circuit while Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Asia Pacific Series finished its second of the third round on its calendar. After qualifying 1 and Race-1 on Saturday, the weather conditions remained dry and warm on Sunday during qualifying 2. While just around one hour before Race 2, there was shower on the track, which made tyre choice become harder to all drivers. More than half of them chose slick tyre and others had wet tyre. Including several Chinese local racers, all 29 drivers showed their own understanding of this 5.451km international-level track and suited to their various driving style, which made the closing race quite ornamental and became hugely rewarding to Tifosi on the grandstand.

Trofeo Pirelli. Pole position in qualifying1, race winner and setting the fastest lap in Race-1, Alex Au from Hong Kong achieved full point in Saturday. Then he extended his domination in this race weekend with another pole position and winning Race-2. Starting from first place, Alex Au kept all field pace in his hand. After this perfect weekend, he closed on championship with only 2-point gap to leading Philippe Prette. Renaldi Hutasoit from Indonesia started from 3rd, made a decisive overtake and got the runner-up in this class while Ringo Chong from Singapore who started from front row was the third to cross the finish line. Both of them and Rama Danindro, 4th place in Trofeo Pirelli, had a very fierce fighting in the whole course of this race.

Coppa Shell. Lebanese Tani Hanna continued his stable performance from the second race of this season. Starting from 4th in Coppa Shell, he recovered a lot in this tight race to be at top on the podium, which also helped to extend his advantage on standing. Tani Hanna was followed by Eric Cheung from Canada and Charles Chan from Hong Kang. In the championship of Coppa Shell, Chinese local heroes Yanbin Xin and Eric Zang are closest chasers behind Tani Hanna.

China’s Min Xiao and Grant Baker from New Zealand also caught the podium positions respectively as the second place and the third place. With double wins in Shanghai, David Dicker grabbed the leading position of Coppa Shell Am standing after Race-1 and extended his advantage to 19 points after Race-2. And he was also the winner of Gentleman Cup while Kanthicha Chimsiri from Thailand won the Ladies Cup.

Thousands of Tifosi and spectators gave greatest cheering, highly appreciated this amazing race. After six practice sessions, all 29 drivers got used to this F1-class track which is 5.451km with long straight and very challenging high-speed corners. Trofeo Pirelli. Starting from pole position, Alex Au from Hong Kong won this dramatic race establishing his own pace right from the word “go”. The field behind him were in quite fierce pattern. Angelo Negro from Italy who started from 6th well recovered his race and got the second place in this class. Championship leader Philippe Prette was the third driver to cross the finish line in Trofeo Pirelli class.

Maurizio Arrivabene: “Compared to the race weekend here last year, this one seemed more difficult right from the start. But thanks to the efforts of everyone in the team, the SF71H got progressively better, until it proved capable of taking second place in qualifying. However, on a track like this, it was not enough to produce an even better race result. Like everyone else, we opted for a one-stop strategy, which therefore meant having to manage the tyres in the second stint, so as to save them for the final laps. However, at that point, the Virtual safety car came out, meaning it was no longer possible to attack.”

Sebastian Vettel: “Today, I was trying to get closer to the car in front and do something; but obviously if you get closer it doesn’t help with your tires. In some corners you don’t really need power and Ricciardo was quicker than us. He was always able to open the gap and I was never really there. He could keep his pace and I think that perhaps it could have been worse for us if he hadn’t had some issues. Unfortunately, there weren’t many chances to do something different. I think it was tricky for us to make the tires work the right way. Then, when the Virtual Safety Car came on, a McLaren was just exiting the box and took a lot of time, while I was struggling with tire warm-up, and I think that was the biggest issue that cost me quite a few seconds. It took to me one and a half lap to get the rhythm back, but by then it was too late. However, there are so many races to go and I believe we need to understand our problems. We have a good car, but we can make it better.”

Kimi Raikkonen: “Today nothing really happened in the race; to be honest, it was a pretty boring one. We know that on this track, once everybody has stopped, whoever is in the front dictates the speed and no matter if he goes four second slower on a lap, there’s no way to pass unless somebody makes a big mistake or runs out of tires. We end up following each other through the whole race. I had no problem managing my tires, in fact they were pretty good. I only had some graining with the first set, but apart from that they were ok. I was never worried about Bottas behind me, we had the speed and I could easily close up with the car in front, but there was no way to pass him. We were all the time doing our best, but couldn’t use our pace. Obviously we cannot be happy with fourth position, but as always, we try to learn from every race.”

Seb 2°, Kimi 4° in a race where overtaking was not on the cards

Monaco, 27 May –Scuderia Ferrari come away from the Monaco GP, finishing in their grid positions, with Sebastian Vettel back on the podium in second place and Kimi Raikkonen fending off Bottas in the Mercedes to claim fourth.

There were a few harmless drops of rain prior to the start, while the wind constantly changed direction. From second place, Seb immediately tried to attach Ricciardo and Kimi kept fourth place. Then the classic Monegaque Sunday train set off aroun the 3337 metre-long track. The only one who was in DRS range, for the little it counts here, was Raikkonen, who was right up behind Hamilton. Stroll’s Williams got a puncture and pitted right in front of the leading duo.

After 12 laps, the first to change tyres was Hamilton taking on Ultrasofts. Seb picked up the pace to cover off any possible undercut and Kimi also went flat out. On lap 16, the Number 5 car pitted with Sebastian taking on Ultrasofts, managing to get out, as planned, ahead of Bottas. Ricciardo and Kimi also changed tyres, with Bottas coming in for the harder Supersofts. Out in front, no change, but the gaps grew a bit bigger.

On lap 28, Ricciardo’s pace dropped and Seb tried to make the most of it, using all the aids on the steering wheel. But this is Monaco and in the twisty bits, engine power counts for little, so that we had the usual paradox here that the leader manages the situation, going slower than those behind.

The other unusual feature is that the tyres, rather than getting worse, actually improve as the graining gradually cleans up. Sebastian kept the pressure on Ricciardo right up to the closing stages, but the only chance here is if your rival makes a mistake.

There was still time for some drama, as Leclerc, having run out of brakes, collided with the back of Hartley at the tunnel exit, bringing out the Virtual Safety Car. Vandoorne who was lapped, pitted and came out right in front of Seb, who thus immediately lost four seconds prior to the restart. So, a low key finish, but a Ferrari on the podium and 30 points towards the Constructors’ championship in the knowledge that we were on the pace. “Thanks guys, the car was very strong,” was Seb’s comment over the radio.

Monaco Grand Prix – “The main thing is that we have potential”

Seb happy with second, Kimi regrets struggling a bit with tyres in Turn 1

Monte-Carlo, May 26 – There is at least one thing that will never be missing from Monaco qualifying, and that’s action. The session went down to the wire and in the end, Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel came away with second place, while his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen narrowly missed third place by a mere three hundredths of a second.

“I’ve been quite happy today”, was Seb’s comment, “even if you always have the feeling you could do much more. However, we tried to get everything out of our car and we got a good position. Red Bull has been strong since Thursday, but we got as close as we could. The main thing for us is that our car has potential. In the first corner I just couldn’t drive the way I wanted but for the rest it was ok. It was a tricky session also in terms of getting the tires together. Now we’ll focus on the start tomorrow, but it will be a long race. It will be a different game to play tomorrow, compared to today. On Sunday, it could be more tactical, and we need to consider that a short period of the race could decide the result of the race itself. Also, we need a bit of luck, but the most important thing is to be ready to react.  We know what we have to do, so we’ll see how the race turns out”.

“Today we struggled a bit to make the tires work straightaway in the first two corners, get them into the correct temperature window and get the car  to turn where we wanted. During the lap they seemed to improve, but here at Monaco, if you are not 100 per cent sure of how it’s going to be in Turn 1, then you lack a bit of confidence. Obviously, we cannot be totally happy with this result,  we wanted to be higher up the time sheet, but this what we have got today.  The race is a different story. Usually it’s very tricky to overtake here, but in the past a lot of things happened.  We’ll try to stay out of any trouble, make the right decisions and do the right things at the right moment”.

Monaco, 26 May – Come the end of the final hour of free practice, Sebastian Vettel was third fastest with a lap in 1’12”023 and right behind him is his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, whose best lap was a 1’12”142. The session was red-flagged towards the end, after Max Verstappen crashed into the barriers, but it resumed for a final three minutes.

Monaco Grand Prix – “It was fun driving around”

Kimi and Seb pleased with first day of practice

Monaco, May 24 – At the end of the two free practice sessions, on a track that was rapidly evolving and with lap times consistently going down, Scuderia Ferrari drivers Seb Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen came away with the third and fifth best times in P2 respectively, while the SF71H showed a consistent pace in race-trim simulation.

“This first day was not too bad, a pretty normal Thursday”, Kimi said. “The feeling with the car was not too bad, but this track is always quite tricky to start with, and we were trying many different things.  The drive around the circuit is a bit more complicated than in other places;  it’s easier to end up making a big mistake, while in a normal place you would just end in a run-off area. You need to be more careful and start pushing when you feel that everything is all right. For sure there are things to improve, but we were able to do what was planned and managed to stay out of trouble.  It’s difficult to have a clear picture; in many practice sessions we have seen some cars being very fast on Friday and then in qualifying it’s a different case. Let’s wait and see what happens on Saturday”.

And here’s Seb’s comment on the day: “I think it was a decent day. In Monaco there’s always traffic, and today we had the red flag, so that it was a bit messy. It’s not that easy to get everything together in a lap here. I am not entirely happy about the second and the last sector. So, I think there’s something we can do better. I believe we got the best out of the tires and on Saturday it will be very close.

There isn’t more pressure on this track than on the others, but I think it’s more fun. The track is very challenging and you have no room for mistakes but it’s quite enjoyable. You think twice before trying something here. However, I have a good feeling with the car. Today I trusted my car and even if I was sliding a little bit, I knew I wouldn’t have touched the barrier. We still need to improve, but generally it’s good fun driving around”.

Monaco Grand Prix – “A completely different challenge”

Kimi and Seb talk about the upcoming Monaco weekend

Monaco, May 23th – As is customary here, activity starts one day earlier at the Monaco Grand Prix. Scuderia Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel, together with the whole team, are preparing for a challenge that is very different to any other racing weekend on the calendar.

“The whole weekend here in Monaco is a big challenge”, confirms Kimi. “This is such a tricky place that even if you are the fastest it doesn’t guarantee you a win; there are so many things that can happen, and you might not have time to react. All those things make it pretty difficult.  This is a special weekend, you need to build up to it a little bit more than on a normal circuit. Tomorrow we’ll start with the practice, then we’ll make the car how we want it to be. The track changes a lot over practice, qualifying and the race. We need to follow these changes, making sure that we’ll have the right set-up to be able to push when it’s time to do so. You need to trust your car and have a good feeling. In testing we already tried the Hypersoft compound, but obviously the conditions in Barcelona were completely different. For sure they gave more grip. It’s impossible to know where we are going to be, but we’ll start tomorrow and go through the normal program. We’ll try to do well”.

Seb adds: “In Monaco the atmosphere is different and the setting so beautiful. The history here is great and we have the chance to be part of this history. It’s definitely a place to enjoy. Winning here means a lot to all of us; if you could chose a race to win on the calendar, you would pick the Monaco GP. This is a track where you need to trust your ability and your car. This is also a weekend in which we will have different compounds, using the Hypersofts and Ultrasofts. To be honest, I think the experience in Barcelona doesn’t matter for this weekend, because the track is so different. Certainly, everything we have learned from Barcelona and the testing session will be important. There are many things we are working on and a lot of things we can do better. The challenge is always there, so we need to stay focused and do our job. We have a strong car and a strong team and it’s up to us to put everything together. Time will tell”.

Monaco Grand Prix – Caught between two eras

Tradition is what counts in Monaco, but there are changes aplenty

It’s the anti-circuit par excellence, the antithesis of overtaking, the negation of aero efficiency, but not of drag! But there is also the weight of history, tradition and glamour. The only way to really understand the Monaco Grand Prix and we’re talking about the motor race, not the surrounding razzmatazz, is to spend at least a day at the side of the circuit, enjoying the mind-blowing imbalance between the narrowness of the track and the speed of the cars.

Tales and anecdotes are myriad here and many of them involve Ferrari. There was the first win in 1952, which wasn’t billed as an F1 race at all, but was contested between Sports cars, then Ascari’s dive into the harbour, the tragedy of Bandini in ’67, the brilliance of Villeneuve in 1981 and the magic Michael Schumacher years, right up to the one-two finish for Vettel and Raikkonen last year.

Then there’s the track, where, it is said, anything can happen, although the reality on so many occasions, at least in the race, is that nothing ever does. It’s the only track where the race length is under the regulation 305 kilometres. For Ferrari, it’s not a long trip, but it’s always a logistical headache, even if the new pits, first used in 2004, made life a bit easier for the teams. And this year, there are further changes to the infrastructure. There are also changes on the tyre front, with the Hypersoft compound making its debut. The timetable too is different, even if the new 15h10 start time on Sunday is almost a throwback to the days, not that long gone, when this race got underway at half three in the afternoon.

What can be considered “old” or more politely, “traditional,” is everything else: the magical setting, the passion of the fans, not all of whom are millionaires, who come to enjoy a weekend that is unique, even in terms of how long it lasts. Because Friday in Monaco is almost sacred as a day off for the F1 cars prior to the grand finale.

The Ferrari SP38, the new creation from the One-Off programme

Posted: 23.05.2018
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, May 23 2018 – The Ferrari SP38, the latest offspring from Ferrari’s One-Off programme, has been unveiled at Fiorano where, after the ceremonial handover to one of Ferrari’s most dedicated customers, the car was immediately put through its paces in a series of hot laps. Designed by the Ferrari Design Centre on the chassis and running gear of the 488 GTB, this unique car reflects the specific vision of a client with a deep passion for racing. The result is a model that can be driven both on road and on track, while at the same time expressing all the beauty and innovation inherent in Ferrari’s road cars. The all-new bodywork, in a newly conceived three-layer metallic red, marks a radical departure from the language aesthetic of the donor car. The twin-turbo, twin-intercooler set-up of the award-winning 488 GTB inspired the team to reference the mighty F40 as an icon from which to instruct the project’s general direction. Compared to the 488 chassis, the visual mass of SP38 appears concentrated over the rear wheels as the wedge design sharply stretches towards the front. In plan view, the strongly tapered nose expands towards muscular wheelarches, giving the car potency and agility. Specific inset headlights were designed to be as thin as possible, with the mandatory DRL (daytime running lights) units relocated to add character and functionality to a slim bumper lip reminiscent of the 308 GTB. On the side, the defining air scoop of the 488 GTB is completely concealed where the sheet metal folds in on itself from the low beltline on the door and into the rear wheelarch and three-quarter light. The effect is dramatic, as it reinforces the importance of the rear volume while, at the same time, maintaining the air flow to the intercoolers at the base of the side window. The dynamic styling continues over the engine cover, which sheds its rear glass and is treated as a flip-up assembly in carbon fibre with shutlines slashing the flanks in a gesture directly reminiscent of the F40’s. Three transversal slats slash across the engine cover to evacuate engine heat, and the smooth integration of a substantial rear spoiler is a hint at the famous rear wing of the F40. The trailing edge of the spoiler links seamlessly with the wing and with the aerodynamic diffuser at the bottom, to create a suggestive frame surrounding the tail volume. A full Tailor Made cabin trim puts the finished touches on this truly special Ferrari, which will be on public display for the first time at the upcoming Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Saturday 26th May 2018.

Antonio Giovinazzi reunited with the Ferrari F1 car in Montmelò

Montmelò, 16 May –Driving a Ferrari is always something special and to do so at an official F1 test makes it even more so. And Antonio Giovinazzi, despite feeling a bit under the weather, made the most of it, covering 148 laps of the Catalan track, the quickest being a 1’16”972, set on the Hypersoft tyres.

“It was a tiring day,” commented Antonio. “We did a lot of laps, but I really enjoyed it. Apart from yesterday, driving the Alfa Sauber, I hadn’t driven in an official test session since last year in Abu Dhabi. We had an interesting programme to work on, with various things to test and different tyre compounds to try. The test was productive and delivered a really big amount of data to correlate with that from the simulator. To be at the wheel of a Ferrari is always a privilege and it was a fantastic feeling.

The first in-season test session has thus ended. There will be two more days, the 31stJuly and 1stAugust, at the Hungaroring, after the Hungarian GP.

Two GP distances, best time on old-type Softs

Montmelò, 15 May –136 laps, over two Grands Prix lengths: that’s the distance racked up by Scuderia Ferrari on the first of two days of this in-season test, with Sebastian Vettel at the wheel. Various developments were tried out on the SF71H, “but not aimed at Monaco” clarified the driver, “because that race is too much of a one-off. Let’s say we got some ideas and now we have to turn them into reality.” Seb’s best time of 1’17”659 was set in the afternoon on Soft compound tyres, of the type used at the start of the season and not in last weekend’s GP. “We learned various things on how to work on track like this one . We know we have a strong car,” concluded the driver before leaving the circuit. Tomorrow, Antonio Giovinazzi takes over at the wheel of the SF71H

Enzo Ferrari Museum of Modena: ‘Il Rosso & il Rosa – Women and Ferrari, the untold story’

Posted: 08.05.2018
Source: Ferrari

Modena, 8 May 2018 – The press launch of the exhibition “Il Rosso & il Rosa” at the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena took place today. Members of both the Italian and international press were present.

The exhibition of some of the most beautiful and iconic Ferrari models, always favoured by prominent figures from the worlds of entertainment, entrepreneurship and sport, is a tribute to all women who over the years have carved out a growing role in the car industry as customers, professionals and drivers.

The event gave space to two exceptional customers to tell the “untold story” of the bond between women and Ferrari: Amy Macdonald, the Scottish singer songwriter, and Deborah Mayer, entrepreneur and GT driver. The two ferrariste revealed their passion for cars from a women’s perspective, now less unusual, recounting fragments of life expressive of pure driving pleasure, adrenaline packed challenges with other drivers.

As a testimony of the unbroken link between women and the Prancing Horse, the exhibition “Il Rosso & il Rosa” has gathered some of the cars most loved by unforgettable female characters. This enthusiasm first took off in the 1950s when Ferrari became a glamorous icon inseparably paired with the stars of cinema: Anna Magnani and the 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter, also chosen by Ingrid Bergman, Hollywood actress Norma Shearer and the 1956 250 GT Berlinetta “Tdf”. The sixties include for example the 250 GTO of 1962, a favourite of French rally driver Annie de Montaigu, and the 250 LM of 1963, chosen by American actress Jayne Mansfield. Then of course there are the cars of the special guests of the event: the Ferrari 458 Italia of Amy Macdonald and the Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 and Ferrari 488 Challenge track models of Deborah Mayer.

The ‘Il Rosso & il Rosa’ exhibition will run throughout 2018 at the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena, open every day from 9:30 am to 6 pm.
