Moscow, 20 July – Before Kamui Kobayashi makes his track debut here, his first day in Moscow was spent exploring the city. Tomorrow, the Japanese driver will be at the wheel of an F60 as part of Moscow City Racing, an event that has run since 2008, bringing together the best motor sport cars in the heart of the Russian capital.

This is Kamui’s first trip to Moscow and he made the most of it, visiting as much as he could, starting with the typical sites of Red Square and the Kremlin. “It’s the first time I find myself in this city and I’m happy I’ve had the time to see some of its landmarks,” Kamui told www.ferrari.com. Usually, as a racing driver, you arrive in a city, go straight to the race track and never manage to see anything of where you are. Events like this mean you do get time to see things and also to get closer to the fans. From the little I’ve been able to see, Moscow is a really beautiful city.”

The Moscow City Racing event will be a special moment in Kamui’s career. For the three years he spent with the Sauber team, he was able to enjoy the power of a Ferrari Formula 1 V8 engine. Now, the driver from Amagasaki will finally be able exploit its raw power while at the wheel of a car completely designed and built in Maranello. “For me it’s a nice feeling taking part in an event like this,” said Kamui. “It is already an honour to be able to race in the World Endurance Championship in the 458 GT, but representing Scuderia Ferrari is really something special. For this, I wish to thank Stefano Domenicali and the team’s partner Kaspersky Lab, whose partnership with the event organisers was the key to getting a Ferrari here.”

Moscow, 19 July –It’s becoming something of a summer tradition to see a Ferrari Formula 1 car roaring through the streets in the heart of Moscow. Once again this year, the Scuderia is taking part in Moscow City Racing, the event that sees the centre of the Russian capital play host to the best from the world of motor sport, this coming Sunday 21 July. For the past three years it’s been Giancarlo Fisichella who has slipped into the cockpit of a Maranello F1 car here, but this year it’s the turn of Kamui Kobayashi, who is the Italian’s team-mate in the FIA World Endurance Championship, driving the AF Corse team’s 458 GT2.

For the Japanese driver, it will be his first appearance at a public event in the colours of the Scuderia, although he has actually already driven a Formula 1 Ferrari, or at least he’s done so virtually, on 28 June, when he was in the Scuderia’s simulator in Maranello. Now Kamui gets the chance to do it for real, even if it’s not the current model: on Sunday, he will drive an F60, which is regularly used for these types of event.

Ferrari’s presence in Moscow is a sign of the ever closer links with Kaspersky Lab, one of the Scuderia’s main sponsors, and an official partner of Moscow City Racing, with its head office actually in the city

Double success for Team Ukraine

Portimao 20 July – It was double success in a warm  and windy Portimao in Portugal for Team Ukraine. Sergey Chukanov took  the win in Trofeo Pirelli and his team mate Andrii Lebed drove to an  easy victory in the Coppa Shell race.

With Daniel Mancinelli taking an easy pole position in the first qualifying for Trofeo Pirelli, he carried the pace into  the early stages of the race with second place man Alex Martin falling  back into Chukanov’s hands. In just the second lap Martin made a move on Mancinelli causing the Italian to spin  and  both to loose position to Chukanov. Martin continued second, but was  soon re-passed by Mancinelli.

Meanwhile Dario Caso who had was forced to start  from the back of the grid, after being penalized by the Stewards in  qualifying for exceeding track limits, was charging hard making his way  to fourth place.

The newest competitor in the championship  19-year-old  Ezequiel Perez Companc (Nephew of   Luis Perez Companc)  showed that the racing blood runs strong through his family. In his  first ever race he showed skills far beyond his years and experience fighting cleanly with much more experienced competitors – he finished a more than credible sixth.

Despite pushing hard Mancinelli, with damage to the rear of his car, could not defeat Chukanov and the race concluded  Chukanov, Mancinelli and Martin. Caso, try as he might, could not pass  Martin and finished fourth. Chukanov maintains his lead in the championship, Caso stays second and Mancinelli moves up to third.

In the Coppa Shell race it was a clear lights to  flag victory for Lebed after his closest rival Fernando Baiz spun in the opening stages of the race. His closest competition David Gostner had  an excellent start moving from 6th to third in the opening laps. All eyes however were on the battle  between Vincenzo Sauto, Fons Scheltema, Eric Prinoth, Massimiliano  Bianchi and Dirk Adamski. The desire of Adamski was clear, after  starting 12th, he put every effort in to score as many points as he could to maintain his championship lead.

As the following group fought over position Gostner pulled away clear into second, chased hard by Prinoth who was doing his best to overcome technical problems. In a last corner move Bianchi  snatched third position from Prinoth, who was as ever gracious in defeat. Lebed took a clean win despite the best  efforts of Gostner in second.

Despite finishing in fifth position Adamski  maintains his championship lead with 102 points over Sauto’s 89. The  battles resume in Portimao tomorrow with the second Trofeo Pirelli Race  taking  place at 09:50 followed by the Coppa Shell competition at 14:00.

Mancinelli and Gostner dominate first Qualifying

Portimao 19 July – Under the searing Portuguese sun it was a driver who could keep their cool who would dominate qualifying.

The ever unflappable Daniel Mancinelli was that driver in the Trofeo Pirelli series recording a time of 1:49.473 ahead of British driver Alex Martin with a 1:49.958. Mancinelli now needs to convert this dominant qualifying performance into some much needed championship points. Dario Caso put in an excellent performance to qualify in third position, but drops to the back of the grid after penalties for his recent successes. Championship leader Sergey Chukanov who qualified fourth is promoted to third on the grid.

In Coppa Shell it was David Gostner who put in by far the quickest time of 1:50.870ahead of Team Ukraine’s Andrii Lebed with a 1:51.014, Gostner’s penalties however mean that he is demoted to sixth position with Lebed starting on pole. Vincenzo Sauto qualified in third position but he is demoted to fifth. Fernando Baiz of Rossocorsa lines up second on the grid followed by Fons Scheltema in third.

Tomorrows Ferrari Challenge action starts on track with the second qualifying session for Trofeo Pirelli at 09:55 and Coppa Shell at 11:45. The afternoon sees race one for Trofeo Pirelli at 15:15 and the Coppa Shell at 17:15.

Testing at Silverstone circuit – A positive outcome

Circuit: Silverstone – 5.891km
Drivers: Felipe Massa & Davide Rigon
Car: Ferrari F138
Weather: air temperature 20/26 °C, track temperature 28/44 °C. Sunny.

The curtain has come down on the Young Driver Test at Silverstone, which saw ten of the Formula 1 teams entered for the Formula 1 World Championship taking part with a variety of drivers, some young prospects, some older. For Scuderia Ferrari, Felipe Massa was the race driver in action at the English track, testing the new Pirelli compounds, along with Davide Rigon, a car development driver for the Scuderia since 2011. The Brazilian did 69 laps, setting the sixth fastest time of the day in 1.33.624. Rigon was back in the Ferrari cockpit in the afternoon, to continue the programme of aerodynamic testing which he had started on Wednesday. He was fifth fastest in a time of 1.33.592, having done 20 laps.

“It seems to me these tyres work better, at least compared to what we saw in the race here” said Felipe Massa at the end of his session. “Over the three days, no one had any problems and from the safety aspect, this is the most important thing. The prototype Hard seemed maybe too hard to race on. I think that in the coming Grands Prix we could head towards a choice of the softer compounds, because they can work at lower temperatures and last longer. Temperature has a significant effect on our car and here for the race for example, it did not help us, but let’s see what happens in Hungary, where we can expect hotter conditions. You need a lot of aerodynamic downforce there and let’s hope we can find the right solutions to be competitive”.

“The past three days have been positive, as I didn’t make any mistakes and I learned a lot” commented Rigon, at the end of the day. “I hope that all the work will have given the team some useful data, maybe some that can be used to prepare for the upcoming races. Again today, we were not concerned with lap times, nor did we make big changes. Instead, we concentrated on adapting the set-up to the new tyres. Now this information will be passed on to our colleagues at the simulator. I think this test has been very useful for my work and also my personal experience, even though I don’t see it as finite, neither for me nor the car because there are no limits to improvement”.

With the Young Driver Test completed, the Scuderia is now preparing for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the tenth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, which takes place next weekend at the Hungaroring.

Testing at Silverstone Circuit – “A question of feeling”

Weather: air temperature 20/26 °C, track temperature 29/43 °C. Sunny.

Another session held in very warm conditions, as Davide Rigon was at the wheel of the F138 for his second day at Silverstone for the Young Driver Test, where once again the conditions were ideal for testing. The Scuderia Ferrari driver completed 97 laps, with a best time of 1.34.053, the Italian having already taken part in this test for youngsters last season, at the wheel of a Ferrari. Today’s programme centred on a continuation of yesterday’s work of evaluating various aerodynamic packages, alongside an analysis of the Soft and Hard tyres brought here by Pirelli for all ten teams present.

“Today, we continued to move forward with the programme we begun yesterday, studying various aerodynamic packages” said Rigon, at the end of the day. “It was only in the afternoon that we began an evaluation of the performance of the Soft and Hard tyres. Once again, we were not looking at lap times, but instead we got through a lot of work to gather data which could help us to improve for the rest of the season. Compared to yesterday, I had a much better feeling from the car and I also knew the track better, which meant I was able to tackle the programme with more confidence, thanks in part to the work of the whole team”.

Scuderia Ferrari continues testing tomorrow, with Felipe Massa driving in the morning and Rigon in the afternoon.

Testing at Silverstone Circuit –  “A whole different world”

Circuit: Silverstone – 5.891km
Driver: Davide Rigon
Car: Ferrari F138
Weather: air temperature 20/28 °C, track temperature 28/45 °C. Sunny.

Scuderia Ferrari got through its planned programme on this opening day of the Young Driver Test. Exceptionally this year, alongside the youngsters aspiring to make it to Formula 1, the ten teams taking part are allowed to use their official race drivers to test the new Pirelli tyres.

Davide Rigon was at the wheel of the F138 at Silverstone, working on a series of tests that were mainly aerodynamic in nature. He completed a total of 447.716 kilometres around the English track, where the hot and sunny weather, which can also be expected at the next round of the championship in Hungary, provided ideal testing conditions.

The Italian driver completed 76 laps, on the way to posting the ninth fastest time of the day in 1.34.874.

“We got through a lot of work today, starting off mainly with me adapting to the car, because apart from a filming day in Barcelona, I hadn’t driven it on track. I had raced here at Silverstone in a GT car before, but Formula 1 is a completely different world! We weren’t looking at the lap times, but worked mainly on acquiring data from comparing different aero configurations, which is a very important part of my work on the simulator. There were no particular problems with the tyres, although we didn’t do any particularly long runs. Compared to last year’s test at Magny-Cours, the demands are different and the programme is longer, but I am happy to deal with this responsibility and I am grateful to the team for the faith they have shown in my efforts. I really hope it is of use to them.”

Rigon continues testing for the Scuderia here tomorrow.

Rigon and Massa on track at Silverstone

Maranello, 16 July – Getting behind the wheel of the F138 at the Silverstone test will be Davide Rigon and Felipe Massa: the Italian driver, who has been on the books at the Scuderia since 2011, will take to the track on all three days, vacating the cockpit for Massa only on Friday morning, when the Brazilian will be able to assess the new Pirelli compounds. The team has taken this decision so that Davide will be able to work on the technical development of the car, while also giving useful cockpit time to Felipe, who is keen to get back on track after his rather short German GP.

Race drivers have been given a dispensation by the FIA to drive at this test, as a result of the tyre problems that occurred at Silverstone during the Grand Prix back on 30th June. The work programme has been established solely by Pirelli and approved by the FIA, with a fixed number of sets available.

TEAMS TRY NEW SPECIFICATION P ZERO TYRE AT SILVERSTONE TEST

Posted: 16.07.2013
Source: Pirelli

Milan, July 16, 2013 – The teams will take to the track at Silverstone for three days from Wednesday to Friday this week for the official young driver test. This is an opportunity to run young drivers, develop cars for the future, and also to test the new specification of P Zero tyre that will be used from the Hungarian Grand Prix onwards – with the 2013 compounds matched to the 2012 construction.

In agreement with the FIA, the annual allocation of tyre sets for testing purposes has been increased by five to 105 in total. Within their remaining tyre sets available, it is up to the teams to decide how many of those tyres they wish to use during each test, and which compounds they would like to assess at every test venue. No team has chosen the supersoft at Silverstone, for example, as its characteristics do not match those of the fast and flowing Northamptonshire circuit: one of the quickest on the calendar.

In addition to the test allocation of 105 sets (minus those already used), Pirelli will bring seven further sets of tyres to Silverstone, which are made up of three hard compound tyres, two medium compound tyres and two prototype hard compound tyres, the latter having already been available for testing during the Friday practice sessions of the Spanish and British Grand Prix this year. Current race drivers (who may only take part in this test on condition that they do tyre testing based on run plans supplied by Pirelli) may use this additional tyre allocation.

The tyres that will be used in Silverstone this week are all in the specification that will be used from Hungary onwards, with a 2012-style Aramid construction matched to the current compounds. All the remaining sets from each team’s existing test allocation have been reproduced to match the new constructions.

Although the overall specification of the tyres tested at Silverstone is new, the teams will still be very familiar with their characteristics, as they have plenty of data on the construction from last year and this year’s compounds. The work done will consist mainly of refining the car-tyre package to get the most out of the new specification.

Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery said: “This young driver test presents a valuable opportunity for the teams to assess the new specification of tyre, and also to run their young drivers. With the occasions for testing minimal during the year, it’s important for every team as well as ourselves to get the very most we can out of these opportunities. The experience of the race drivers is bound to bring a lot and we look forward to hearing their feedback. We’re not expecting the new specification of tyre to feel considerably different to the previous specification to drive, and the general characteristics should be similar. Nonetheless, there will be plenty of useful work that the teams should be able to carry out within the next three days.”

2013 FIA F1 World Championship: Young Driver Training Test

The FIA today informed Formula One’s teams of the conditions that will apply at the Young Driver Training Test scheduled to take place at Silverstone as of July 17.

The announcement follows a meeting of F1’s Sporting Committee on Wednesday, July 3 at the Nürburgring, prior the German Grand Prix.

The conditions set out are in accordance with Article 22.4(h)(i) of the F1 Sporting Regulations, as recently amended by the World Motor Sport Council, and are as follows:

The Young Driver Training Test will remain a three-day test, from July 17-19.

Only the 2012 construction will be used for the test but with the hard, medium and soft 2013 compounds.

The test will now allow teams to field drivers who have competed in more than two F1 World Championship events provided that the purpose of them doing this is to test tyres for Pirelli.

In order to meet this requirement, all teams shall ensure that any changes made to a car at these times are exclusively related to the tyre tests set out in the run plan provided by Pirelli.

An FIA observer will be appointed to ensure the regulations are being followed.

Bianchi and the FDA: a strong connection

The French driver talks about his first few months in Formula 1
Maranello, 13 July –It’s been a very exciting first half year for Jules Bianchi, especially the initial few months. It was all a bit of a rollercoaster ride, with a long climb, followed by the wait for Force India, the team for which he had filled the third driver role in 2012, to decide on its line-up, the terrible drop, which is pretty much the only way to describe the negative outcome of this story and then the immediate swing back up, which ended with an agreement with the Marussia F1 Team which has seen him take part in his first season as an official Formula 1 driver. However, these past six months have not brought Jules’ links to the Ferrari Driver Academy to an end, although his visits to the school that is aimed at young drivers have become few and far between given his current duties.

“It’s true, I come here less often than in past years because, apart from the races, there are so many other things which I have to do with my new team,” Jules explained to www.ferrari.com, during a break in an FDA promotional event at the Fiorano Track. “I often go to the team’s factory to talk to the engineers and before each Grand Prix there are always sessions on the simulator. However, I am still in contact with Luca Baldisserri: we speak on the phone during race weekends and the advice he gives me is always useful. I must say, tackling my first year as a race driver, all the experienced I gained with the FDA has been really important: not just in terms of the technical aspect, but also for all the rest, such as how to deal with the sponsors and the media. It was definitely a plus at a time when I am getting to grips with the top level of the sport.”

“I am very happy to finally have got the chance to make my Formula 1 debut, because at one point this winter, I’d given up hope,” recounted Jules. The time ticked by and Force India didn’t give me any answer for weeks. Then, when Stefano Domenicali called me to say the opportunity had gone, I was really very disappointed, but luckily that only lasted a few hours. Actually, another call came through from Maranello, which said I had to get ready to go to Barcelona where the last test session was underway and that there was a chance I could go to Marussia! At first, I didn’t want to raise my hopes but then they started to get ever stronger and when I went for the seat fitting, I felt I’d got it, even if there were a few contractual details still to be sorted.”

From then on, his prospects changed. “It’s true, I felt a great sense of relief and I’m grateful to everyone who helped me reach one of the targets, including Ferrari and my manager, Nicolas Todt, that I had set myself at the start of my career,” said Jules. “I soon felt at home at Marussia and I immediately understood the difference between being a race driver for a team and its third driver. You are a lot more involved and feel you are an integral part of the programme. It also changes your relationship with the other drivers, who now look on me differently.”

“The week before Melbourne I was totally focused on the race and there was room for nothing else in my head,” he continued. “I spent four days at the factory to be with the team and to get to know everyone better and then on the Sunday, I flew to Australia. Honestly, once there, I did not feel under excessive pressure, neither before qualifying, nor before the race. In fact, I was actually much more relaxed than, for example last year at the World Series race weekends! Of course, the targets are different: for us a win is to finish ahead of Caterham. Do I miss fighting for the victory? Every driver wants to win but the important thing is to manage to create for yourself the right incentives and that’s what I’m doing. I am pleased with the way the first races have gone, with the exception of the last one…”

For Jules, there is of course the one dream still waiting to be realised. “Yes, it’s always there and there’s no point talking about it…. Everyone can imagine exactly what it is!

FDA -Baldisserri on Bianchi: It’s important he always has new targets”

Posted: 13.07.2013
Source: Ferrari

Maranello, 13 July –When one of your students completes his course, it’s always cause for great satisfaction, even in a rather special school such as the Ferrari Driver Academy. Jules Bianchi was the first driver to be taken onto this programme created by Ferrari and today, he has reached one of the targets which had been established at the start of his journey, that of racing in Formula 1.“It was very important for Jules to have finally reached the highest level of motor sport,” explained Luca Baldisserri, the head of the FDA, talking to www.ferrari.com. “This is a key year for him: he has to gain experience and grow as a driver in what is a very competitive environment, learning to manage stress and always stay focused. We try to help him, especially on the mental level, supporting him as much as possible, because clearly we cannot get involved in the operational side of his relationship with Marussia.”Luca is pleased with what Jules has achieved over these first six months, but as always he proves to be what one might call a stimulating teacher. “At the start, he was very psyched up and you could see how the delight at having managed to get into Formula 1 was giving him an additional boost. I can see he is growing, also in terms of his relationship with the team, learning to discuss things with the engineers, trying to understand what direction to go in to develop the car and trying to make a contribution. It’s very important that he should always be able to set himself targets, so he doesn’t slacken his effort and make stupid mistakes, which could come from a lack of concentration. In this phase of his career, it’s vital he proves able to grab any opportunities that can arise over a race weekend, maybe when circumstances can mix things up, such as rain or a safety car period: these are the times when a driver can make the difference.”

Even if Jules himself has underlined how important has been the support of the FDA, Baldisserri does not want to overestimate its value. “It’s true Jules has been with us since the start, but one has to admit that back then, we were not as structured as we are now and that he already had a reasonable level of training. The real effects of our programme are being seen and will be seen, at least I hope so, with the drivers who joined the FDA at the start of their journey, such as Raffaele Marciello and Antonio Fuoco.”
